Westmoreland County Probate Records

Westmoreland County Virginia was formed in 1653 from Northumberland County. The county seat is Montross, Virginia. Some well-remembered residents of the county were President George Washington, President James Monroe and Robert E. Lee as well as Robert Carter, Henry Lee, Richard Lee, Daniel McCarty, George Turbeville and John Turbeville. A bloody naval battle occurred on July 14 1813 at the mouth of the Yeocomico River when a British force attacked an American vessel, leaving no survivors.

Wakefield PlantationThe great-grandfather of George Washington settled on Bridges Creek in 1657. The family acquired expanded land to the south toward nearby Popes Creek where the first section of the house in which George Washington was born was built before 1718 and enlarged by his father between 1722 and 1726. There are thirty-two graves of Washington family members at the Bridges Creek cemetery plot, including the half brother of George, his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
"Here lyes ye body of Jane Wife of Augustine Washington Born at Popes Creek Virginia Westmoreland ye 24th of Xber 1699 & died ye 24th of Xber 1729. She left behind her two sons & one daughter."

"Here lyeth the body of John Washington eldest son to Cap Lawrance Washington who departed this life ye 10th of January 169_ Aged 10 years & 6 months. Also Mildred Washington eldest daughter of said Washington who died ye 1st of August 1696 aged 5 months. "
