Thomas Savage LWT dated 9 Jan 1826, recorded 10 Aug 1829. To Peggy Harrell, a woman named Matildy and her increase now in her possession, a boy Burwell, man Jim, and to pay a debts due her as her guardian. Riddick Harrell, the husband of Peggy Harrell, returned the appraisement dated 13 Feb 1832. Negroes: Matilda and child, girl Barbary, boy Allen. Benjamin Turlington, admr. Settlement to heirs 1831 reflects that Dempsey Byrd married Peggy Harrell in Oct 1833; Margt. Harrell, gdn of Clarissa Harrell; Dempsey Byrd gdn of Thomas Harrell. No gdn of Nelson Harrell. An 1832 decree of the court required Margt. harrell and Benjamin Darlington, admrs., sell the negroes.

Anne Eliza Shepherd To the Honorable Richard H. Baker, judge of the Circuit Court of Nansemond County, complaint sheweth unto the court your complainant, William S. Shepherd. Your complaintant respectfully represents to the court and says that his mother, Ann Elixa Shepherd, late the wife of his father, Thomas S. Shepherd, and who was Ann Elize Browne, died on the 8th of Octo. 1851, possessed and entitled to a tract of land which was devised to her by the 13th clause of the last will and testament of John Minton which will was duly recorded on the 12th day of April 1830 in Nansemond County, which tract of land is called Wilsons and contains 160 acres more or less and adjoins the lands of John C. Cohoon, Ro. J. Saunders and the Nansemond River, that at the death of said Ann Eliza Shepherd on the 8th day of Octo. 1851, she left her husband Thomas S.Shepherd surviving her, who became entitled to said land for life as the tenant by courtesy and she at the time also left surviving her the following children, to-wit: your complaintant now over 21 years of age and Bettie M., James E., Mary E.and Fanny S. Shepherd. That the said Thomas S. Shepherd also died on the 19th day of April 1860 and thereupon his life right to the said landterminated.

Jeremiah Stoakes LWT recorded 1806. Bequests to Thomas Allmand Stoakes, his son, the land whereon he lived; to Nancy Stoakes, the land adj. Shoulders Hill and between Rd. Powell and Thomas Mears. To Thomas Allmand Stoakes and Nancy Stoakes all his swamp land at the head of the sestern branch. Rd. Powell, admr. Decree dated 1803 divided the dower of Keziah Allmand as follows: 26 acres to James Ruxton and Jane his wife, 20 acres to Rhoda Allmand and 25 acres to Thomas Allmand. Thomas Allmand left a wife and three children, Jane, Nancy and Rhoda. Nancy died and left Thomas, an infant. Keziah died. Rhoda, a child of Thomas Allmand. Heirs; Jane, wife of Buxton, Thomas, heir of Nancy, Rhoda, heir of Thomas.

Josiah Riddick, Sr. of "Soldiers Hope" in Nansemond County, liberated slaves: Ann, the daughter of negro woman Phillips and Fabius, Willis, Millicent and James children of my negro woman Maria and the future increase of the females, whether born before or after my death.

John Darden, 120 acres purchased of A. McNeil's estate and released by the Commonwealth, sold for division and purchased by W. H. Darden for $120 and assigned to N. P. P. William H. Darden to N. P. P. dated 1 Jun 1852. Edwin Ricks died 1 Jan 1835, with land. The share of Anne Elize Dove was assigned to her in 1841. Also, the dower of the widow left three shares undivided, to be divided now. Widow: Maria. Children: Anne Eliza, Virginia F. (married Dr. E. D. Phillips), Mary W. (married William H. Darden, died Jan 1852), Caroline, under age 21.

Allen Daugherty died about 1838, intestate, leaving widow, Ann Daughtrey, and seven children, viz: Margaret A., wife of John B. Jenkins; Elizabeth, wife of James M. Holland; Lucy Ann, wife of Elijah Joyner, Sol. P. Daughtrey, William H. Daughtrey, Mills E. Daughtrey, Sarah A. Daughtrey (over 21). Mrs. Jenkins died 3 Sept 1866 leaving children: Junius W. Jenkins (over 21), John Jenkins, all other under age 21. Mrs. Joyhner died 1862 and left one child, Eulalia B. Joyner, under 21. Mills E. Daughtrey bot. of James H. Holland. F

Katharine Haywood Katharine, the widow of Philemon Haywood and her daughter and son-in-law, Joseph Wrighting and Sarah, his wife, to George Veale. 13 Oct 1747. One certain parcell, dividend of land containing 40 acres situate in the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and in the county of Norfolk, Virginia, adj.the land of Colo: William Craford and the lans of Solomon Ewell which said land being part of parcell of land given to Henry Lowe the younger by the last will and testament of his father, Henry Lowe, the elder and the said Henry Lowe the younger dying without heirs, it fell to John Lowe as heir at law to his deceased brother and was by said John Lowe transferred and set over to Philemon Haywood.

Lewis Holland Document dated Jasper County, Georgia, "This Indenture of the parties made this thirteenth day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and thirty seven between Lewis C. Holland of the first part, Charlotte Williams his intended wife, of the second part, and Joseph L. Holland, a trustee of the third part, Lewis C. Holland of the State aforesaid and his intended wife of the State of Virginia, Nansemond County and Joseph L. Holland a trustee of Jasper County State of Georgia. Witnesseth that whereas the said Charlotte Williams is seized to her and her heirs in fee simple a certain property, to-wit: Manerve a woman, Dick, Essick, Tooke, Simon and Criss, and whereas a marriage is intenced shortly to be had and solemnized between the said Lewis C. is to receive the following property to-wit, one four wheel carriage and two horses with sundries other property belonging to the said Charlotte not above named as a marriage portion. It is therefore covenanted and agreed by and between the said parties to these presents in manner and form following, that i s to say, the said Lewis C. for himself his heirs, executors and administgrators, doth covenant and agree to and with the said Joseph L. Holland, trustee as aforesaid." /s/Lewis C. Holland. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of: Julia A. C. Holland, Clotilda J. Holland, Washington P. Holland. Francis D. Charlton. (Document in Kilby Papers). 18 Mar 1843. Indenture between Francis D. Charlton of the first part, Osen R. Flynn, Edward M. Browne and James B. Norfleet of the second part, and Andrew McAlester, mutually chosen between the parties as their rustee of third part, all residing in Nansemond County. Francis D. Charlton is indebted to Owen R. Flynn $310.71 by bond and by bond bearing date with these presents and payable one day after date. Owen R. Flynn, Edward M. Browne and James B. Norfleet stand bound as the securities of Francis D. Charlton; bond to Jackson Powell for $500 dated 12 Jan 1842, payable two days after date, to which Owen R. Flynn and Joseph Holladay stand as securities; bond to James Eley for $369.63 dated 23 Jul 1842 payable on demand, to which James B. Norfleet and Edward M. Browne stand as securities; bond to Jacob Kelly for $83.08 dated 2 Aug 1842 payable on demand to which Edward M. Browne stands as security. To indemnify securities Charlton conveys to Andrew McAlister a lot in the upper part of the town of Suffolk measuring in front 99 feet and running back to the line of Thomas B. Benton and Custine his wife 8 Feb 1843 and is the same John B. Benton purchased of Henly Herman by deed. /s/F. D. Charlton.

E. R. Hunter deeds to E. B. Hunter on 1 Oct 1837 conveying a lot of land in the town of Suffolk, bounded by Cross Street running in a direction from the Episcopal Church as it now stands by the Post Office down to the branch or ravine in a direction towards the Academy on the sest side of the Town.

Joseph Jones 10 Dec 1764. Joseph Jones and his wife Martha of the Parish of Suffolk in the county of Nansemond County to George Washington, Thomas Walker and Fielding Lewis, Gentlemen for 80 pds, two tracts of land in the Great Dismal Swamp in the Parish of Suffolk which hath lately been granted by his Majesty to Joseph Jones by patents both bearing date of 7 Jul 1763, one for 32 acres, and the other for 400 acres. /s/Joseph Jones /s/Martha Jones. Wit: Lemuel Riddick, John Reade, Nathaniel Wright. 10 Dec 1764. Acknowledged.

Abstract of the Jussely land, abstract of title to the Jussely land on the Nansemond County near Capt. Cahoon. In 1790 the land was owned by Abraham Spencer and charged to him on the Commissioner Books and taxes were paid by him when he died and by his last will and testament dated 1790 gave it to his son, Stephen Spencer. In 1810 Stephen Spencer sold the land told John Jussely as 150 acres. 10 May 1814 John Jusseley conveyed the property to his children. A deed of Stephen Spencer to John Brewer dated 1810 the land was described as being 150 acres bounded on the west by the Nansemond River, on the south by part of lands on which Mills Minton Sr. residedes, bottom of George V. Osheal until it intersects Kentons Creek.

Thomas Gregorie on 11 Dec 1769 Thomas Gregory and his wife sold to Edward Wright 150 acres bounded by Nansemond River on one side, by a creek between him (Gregorie) and David Osheal on the other, thence by natural bounds up a branch dividing it crom the lands of Gresham Coffield, orphan of Daniel Coffield, deceased, according to the meanders of said branch, then by two marked trees to the end which is an oak standing near Joseph Jones' house and upon the main road, thence from the said oak a line of marked trees, various courses between the said land and Capt. Miles Kiings land to a marsh, thence through that marsh to the said river, being the first station....

Mills Minton. Deed Book 15, pp. 360, datge 1779. Osheal to Minton. 212 3/4 acres of land to the southward and westward of Nansemond River up the mouth of Kings Creek, from thence to Collins new corner binding on the said Minton land, down corner of David Cooper to the mouth of a gut running into Keetons Creek.

John W. Murdaugh. Deed dated 23 Aug 1836 of John W. Murdaugh and his wife to W. L. D. Capps, sold 216 acres described in two pieces in a deed from Prentis and wife to Josiah Murdaugh dated 24 Aug 1814 and which was conveyed to said J. W. Murdaugh by his father Josiah Murdaugh by deed 10 Jul 1822; also one tract of swamp land adj. John Clarke, formerly land of Josiah Murdaugh, containing 110 acres, given to J. W. Murdaugh by his father Josiah Murdaugh by will dated April 1826. Also his interest in 100 acres of Mrs. Jane Murdaugh purchased from Christopher Roberts by deed dated 14 May 1813.

Jesse Perry. By virtue of a deed of trust executed by Thomas Hare of the County of Nansemond to me as trustee for Jesse Perry and duly admitted to record in the clerks office of said county court on 3rd day of Mar 1834 to secure a debt due unto the said Jesse Perry of $67.54 interest from the 3d March 1834 to 22nd. Making the whole amount of principal and interest due to said Jesse Perry, $88.01. I proceeded on the 22nd day of March 1839 on the premises at the request of said Perry the creditor to sell the property in ths said deed conveyed, to-wit, all the household and kitchen furniture of the said Thomas Hare.../s/W. Robert Smith Lands purchased by James R. Saunders of Edwin Smith belonging to Robert R. Smith, a child of Robert R. Smith, deceased. The child received these lands from the estate of his father, Robert R. Smith, deceased (Chancery suit in Nansemond County for division of estate of Robert R. Smith, dated 1850). 130 acres adj. George W. Riddick and called Ruth Lassiter land obtained by Robert R. Smith from Lassiter, formerly Amos Lassiter by his will given to Daniel Lassiter, his son, after his wife, Ruth Lassiter, died. Amos Lassister will was recorded 11 Dec 1825.

William B. Whitehead and Thomas G. Benton to James B. Norfleet, all of the parties residing in the Town of Suffolk. Whereas Elliott Whitehead, late of said Town, in and by his last will and testament, bequeathed " It is my will and desire that all of estate both real and personal be sold, and that the proceeds of the sale, after deducting the payment of all my just debts, funeral expenses and other lawful charges be paid over and distributed as follows, One moiety to be paid over to my affectionate and dead wife Catherine S. Whitehead and the other moeity to be distributed and equally divided among my children Margaret Ann, Richard Owen, Catherine Elliott, and any other increase of my wife by me begotten, born after my death" and Elliott Whitehead did constitute William B. Whitehead and Thomas G. Benton his executors....the said will admitted to record in the county court of Nansemond at a quarterly court held 12 Jun 1837, and on the 13th day of the month William B. Whitehead and Thomas G. Benton the said named executors qualified as such, and whereas....William B. Whitehead and Thomas G. Benton decided tgo sell the real estate....James Norfleet was the highest bidder on 14 June 1837, six lots. Source: The Kilby Papers.

James Wright 11 Feb 1765, James Wright of the parish of Suffolk and county of Nansemond to George Washington, Thomas Walker and Fielding Lewis, Gent. for 60 pds., tract in the Great Dismal Swamp on the eastward side of the Nansemond River, original patent granted to James Coles for 50 acres dated 21 April 1695, which lands descended unto the daughter of James Coles, who intermarried with Colo. Thomas Godwin who conveyed the same to William Drury who by his last will and testament devised the same to his wife Eliza who intermarried with one, C. Medan White, and they conveyed the same to Colo. Thomas Godwin which by his last will and testament was given unto his son, Edmund, for life, reversion to his grandson, Brewer Godwin. Admiral Brinkley died intestate on 11 Dec 1849, leaving widow, Margaret and six children: Robert B. Brinkley, age 19, John R., Mary E. Hugh G., Cornelia, Margaret A., Admiral (born in 9 months after father's death) all alive and under age. Widow died 28 Dec 1853. Source: Nansemond County Estates.

Mrs. Catherine Carney died ca 1830, and was the widow of Thomas Miars. She left seven children, viz: Josiah Miars by first husand and six by Carney; Sarah E. T., now wife of John B. Haynes; William Carney; Benjamin Carney, Edwin Rice Carney, Henrietta Carney, unnamed infant (died 1835) Source: Kilby Papers.

Stephen Culpepper last will and testament proved 18 Dec 1833. To son George Washington who is also a son of Sally Britt and should she die without issue to eldest son of my brother, Samuel Culpepper. Daughters, Ann Elizabeth, Penelope and daughters of Sally Britt.

Daniel Williams last will and testament filed in the Southampton County suite papers of Owens vs. Carr included in the 1812 bundle of Southampton County Chancery causes. The land in question was added to Southampton in 1785. "In the Name of God Amen, I Daniel Williams of Virginia and County of Nansemond being weak in body but in perfect memory and mind and thanks be to God for it and calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men to die to make and ordain this my last will and testament. Princiapply and first of all recommend my soul unto the hands of the almighty God and my body to the ground to be buried in a christian like manner at the discretion of my executor and as touching such worldly estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give in the following manner and form. I leave to my loving wife, Mourning Williams, the use of the plantation and land whereon I now dwell and my mill, also four negroes, viz: Caty, Isabell, More and Venus and two feather beds and furniture and one seventh part of all the other part of my estate that I shall hereafter leave to be sold during her natural life and after her decease my will is that the aforesaid negroes and feather beds shall be sold to the highest bidder on two years credit and the money arising from such sale to be equally divbided amongst my six children, viz: John Williams, Isaac Williams, Josiah Williams, William Williams, Richard Williams and Marcilla Williams to them and their heirs forever. I leave to my loving son John Williams the use of the land whereon he now dwells, also the use of the land I bought of William Austin during his mother's natural life. I give to my son John Williams after his mother's decese all my lands in Nansemond County to him and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever. I also give to my son John Williams all the horses, cattle, hogs, tools, etc. and nine pounds current money in consideration of his schooling my son Josiah two years and my son William three years and my daughter Marcilla two years...." To son, Josiah, after his mother's decease, all land on Meherrin River, etc. I give to my son, William, after his mother's decease the plantation whereon my son John Williams now dwells with all my lands that join the same on the east side of Stevens Gutt, to his heirs forever and if no such heir, to my son, Richard Williams. Daughter, Mary Steavens, and Henry Stevens all that he is indebted to me. Son, Isaac Williams the land I bought of Peter Garland, etc. My desire is that NBicholas Maggott may be a director and an assistant to my executor. Son, Isaac Williams, sole execugtor. 21 May 1767. Probated 11 Apr 1768.
