Monroe County Genealogy Records

Monroe County was named after President James Monroe and is located on lands stretching from the Little Tennessee River South to the Hiwassee River were ceded from the 1819 Treaty with the Cheroke Indians. The first gold mines found in the state were located in Monroe County.
