Court Minutes of Granville County

Granville County MapGranville County was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe County. It was named after John Carteret, the second Earl Granville, who was one an heir to one of the eight original Lord Proprietors of North Carolina and who claimed 1/8th of the land granted by the Charter of 1665. The claim was established as consisting of approximately the northern half of North Carolina and this territory was known as the Granville District, or Oxford. During 1752, parts of Granville, Bladen and Johnston Counties were combined to form Orange County. In 1764 the eastern part of Granville became Bute County, and in 1881 when parts of the eastern part of Granville County became Bute County, parts of Granville, Franklin and Warren Counties were combined to form Vance County.
