Lewis County was established in 1843 from parts of Perry, Hickman, Maury, Lawrence, and Wayne Counties. It was named after Meriwether Lewis, the famed explorer of the Lewis and Clark expedition, who died within the county's boundaries. County seat: Hohenwald.
The ink on the county records did not survive well; however, it was possible to bring up the ink on the paper to make most of it more readable. Every page as scanned according to the order in which it appeared in the book. Nevertheless, some of the pages were misnumbered.
