Grundy County was founded in 1844 and was named in honor of Felix Grundy of Virginia. Grundy served as chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, representative in Congress from Tennessee 1811-1814, U.S. senator, 1829-1838, and attorney general in President Van Buren's Cabinet. Before his death in 1840, he was once again a U. S. senator.
