Close, Percy. On January 28, 1886 Percy (age 11) and Willie May Close (age 12) boys, ran away from the Orphans Home in Decatur and made their way on foot to Powder Springs in less than 30 hours. Willie May had been in the home for several years, and came from Cedartown, and was trying to reach home. Percy Close had been in the home since May, and was admitted from Augusta. Mr. A. J. Gibson was superintendent of the Orphan's Home. "We ran away because we were abused." Said May. The abuser was Paul Brannon, Mr. Brannon's son, and Mrs. Hampton, the school teacher. Mr. Brannon is a small man of about 55 years, having a full beard and gray hair. Mrs. Hampton, the teacher, is a widow. The Constitution, Atlanta 1/29/1886

Culpepper, (young), living at the Children's Home in Macon, during a fire. "He was the only boy old enough to be of any service, as there was no other man on the premises". Mrs. J. B. Culpepper lost nearly all her clothing. The children were taken to the homes of Mr. Jesse Hardeman, Mr. Huff, Dr. Payne, Mrs. Ralor and Alex. Cherry.
