Mayes of Cobb County
Thomas Mayes, of Scotch-Irish descent who came to America from Derrylouran, County Tyrone, Ireland.

John Mayes was born in Paxtang, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1760 and died in Franklin County, Georgia on 5 Nov 1827. The family came from Virginia through South Carolina into Wilkes County, Georgia where John Mayes, Jr. was born. John Mayes probably served in the Revolutionary War. His last will and testament bequeathed property to his wife, Margarett, his daughters and sons, Thomas, William, James, Edward, Robert, Newton and Harvey. Of these sons, Thomas, William and Edward settled in Cobb County. Edward married twice, the second wife being Mrs. Appling Gober, formerly Elizabeth Plaster of Georgia, a widow. Edward Hayes was one of five men elected as a justice of the inferior court of Cobb County in 1833. He resided in the southern part of the county, his plantation being near Rottenwood Creek towards the Chattahoochee River
Thomas Mayes, son of John, was a pioneer settler to Cobb County. He was married to Luvice Brinlee on 25 Apr 1815 in Franklin County. He married several times. The children of the first marriage were:
- Amanda Clementine Mayes married in 1836 Daniel Aderhold.
- Lourinda Katherine married in 1837 James Barnett Blackwell.
- Mace Andrew Augustus Mayes married in 1841 Eliza Aderhold.
Other children were: - John Alexander McWhorter Mayes married Margaret, a sister of Eliza Aderhold.
- Thomas J. G. Mayes.
- Elizabeth Jane Mayes.
- William Thomas Mayes, settled near Marietta-Roswell Road area of Cobb County; married Elizabeth Thomas, license dated 6 April 1813 in Franklin County. Issue:
- Eliza Evelina Mayes married Asbury Hargrove.
- Nancy Sidney Mayes married James Watson.
- Peggy Minerva Mayes married Jesse Gober.
- Polly Polona Mayes married James Pickens.
- Athalena Elizabeth Mayes married in 1847 Thomas A. Gober.
- Sylvania Emeline Mayes married Henry Kemp.
- Terrece Cordelia Mayes married Isaac Sewell.
- Martha Jane Mayes married Columbus Sewell.
- Dovy Jane Mayes.
- Frederick Mayes.
