Blackwell of Cobb County
James Barnett Blackwell was born in 1819, died 6 May 1894 in Marietta, buried in the family cemetery located on East Piedmont Road. He was married to Lourinda Katherine Mayes, the daughter of Thomas Mayes who was also a pioneer to Cobb County.
The 1860 Census lists him with 23 slaves and two of his sons attended the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta. He served as a member of the Marietta Presbyterian Church; was slected Sheriff for 1852 to 1854 and 1856 to 1858; State Representative during the years of 1872 and 1874. He later operated a line on the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad; his stop was called Blackwell's Station. Unfortunately, it fell into financial ruin by 1891. Issue:

- Jasper L. Blackwell, born 17 Mar 1842 in Cobb County.
- Marion C. Blackwell, born 20 Dec 1843 in Cobb County, wounded in action during the War Between the States. He died 25 Aug 1867.
- Amanda Jane Blackwell, born 7 Nov 1845 in Cobb County.
- Mary Lena Blackwell, born 26 Sept 1847 in Cobb County.
- Georgia A. Blackwell, born 22 Nov 1849 in Cobb County.
- Eliza Blackwell, born 23 Mar 1852 in Cobb County, died 19 Jan 1869.
- Cordella F. Blackwell, born 16 Sept 1853 in Cobb County.
- V. Alice Blackwell, born 9 May 1857 in Cobb County.
- William Mayes Blackwell, born 21 Sept 1860 in Cobb County.
James Barnett Blackwell married the second time on 19 Dec 1865 to Mrs. Elizabeth L. Bellinger, the widow of Dr. M. S. Bellinger (died 1851 leaving her a widow with a daughter, Mary. James Barnett Blackwell died 6 May 1894 and was buried in the family cemetery located on East Piedmont Road in Marietta.
