Darien
The Scots were recruited by General James Oglethorpe to occupy the fort site at King George, as well as to build Fort Darien on the Altamaha Bluff, which was a short distance upriver. They also build a town, first called "New Inverness" after their homeland in the Scottish Highlands. These first settlers of 1736 provided the backbone of the ambush party at Bloody Marsh on St. Simons Island which defeated the Spanish and drove them off of the American Continent, thus ending the War of Jenkin's Ear (Great Britain and Spain). They were brave citizen-soldiers, who fought guerrilla style and completely surprised the Spanish.
