Dade County Wills and Estates
Dade County was created on Dec. 25, 1837 entirely from Walker County. It wa named for Major Francis Langhorne Dade who was killed in the Dade Massacre by Seminole Indians in December 1835. County seat is Trenton, Georgia.
Earliest settlers: Alvin Adkins, James R. Allison, S. E. Bromley, William J. Cagle, John M. Cantrell, William C. Cureton, J. A. Dozier, Thomas F. Smith, Ben F. Parker, Henry Arline, John and William Harrell. The earliest surviving will book was 1903 to 1948, so researchers need to use the other estate books, such as inventories and appraisements.
Genealogy Tips
Dade and Walker Counties are in Northwest Georgia near the Tennessee border. Research is suggestion in these three areas.
The first settlers of Dade County won the land in the Georgia Land Lotteries after the Cherokees were forced off the land. Many settlers worked in regional coke and coal mines that contributed to development of the Chattanooga, Tennessee area. That means that Chattanooga is also a possible genealogy angle.
