Amelia County Probate Records

Amelia County was created in 1734 from Prince George and Brunswick Counties and was named after Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of England. During 1754, Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County, and later the County was reduced to its current size when Nottoway County was separated in 1789. The British under General Tarleton, raided the county in 1781 during the Revolutionary War.The first court house was located near Pridesville, Virginia, but was destroyed by fire in 1766. Later, it was located at Dennisville until 1849 when it was removed to its present site.

William Penix of Nottoway Parish and Amelia County, being weak in body. To my son Jeremiah Penix 125 acres with the plantation whereon I now live, being half the land I hold. Also one Negro boy Chester; To my son Edward Penix 125 acres being the lower part of my land. Also one Negro to be bought; My sons Jeremiah Penix and Edward Penix shall give 15 PDS. to my two youngest sons, William and Chals Penix to help them purchase 125 acres apiece; To my son Willm Penix one Negro to be bought; To my son Chals Penix one Negro to be bought; To my daughter Jerusha Penix one Negro girl Jeney, likewise a feather bed and furniture; To my daughter Judah Penix one Negro boy Sam, likewise a feather bed and furniture; To my daughter Elizabeth Penix one Negro girl Tamer, likewise one feather bed and furniture after the decease of her mother.
