David, Christopher and William Irving came to America from Irving, Scotland during the reign of King George II, and settled in Bedford County. They were granted land in the vicinity of New London, Leesville and Alta Vista. The old Irving home stood on the site until it was burned in 1888. In 1786 David Irving patented 278 acres on Flat Creek; in 1787 Christopher Irving-Clendenning patented 115 acres on the west branch of Flat Creek and in 1793 Christopher Irving patented 1140 acres on both sides of Flat Creek.
William Irving was married to Polly Anthony. He died in 1767 when he only son, William, Jr. was very small His widow married Robert Cowan. William Irving Sr. build his home "Otter" near the Otter River about seven miles from New London. William Irving Jr. married Martha, the daughter of Jesse Burton who helped to lay out Lynchburg. Issue:
- Edmund Irving, attorney; removed to Rocky Mount, Virginia.
- James Irving of Campbell County.
- Jesse Irving married Clementina, daughter of Colonel William and Anne (Carrington) Cabell of "Union Hill" in Nelson County. Issue:
Christopher Irving had a son, Christopher, Jr., commissioner for Bedford County in 1781. Wife, Mary. In 1783 they sold 100 acres of land (being part of 290 acres patented by him in 1780) lying on both sides of Watery Branch, both sides of Orvines Road at Anthonys corner; along John Callaways line; also 190 acres on south side of Cattail branch along Irvings Road and Watery Branch. In 1784, Christopher Irving purchased the old buildings in New London and gransferred land to his sons, Charles and Isaiah. In 1779, Colonel William Irving and Captain Christopher Irving removed to Kentucky.
- William C. Irving married Mary A., daughter of Meriwether Lewis of Milton, North Carolina.
- Ann C. Irving married David Flournoy.
- Edward C. Irving married (1) Jane, daughter of Meriwether Lewis (2) Mrs. Merrett.
- Mary E. Irving married Philip D. Christian of Lynchburg.
- Jesse Irving married Margaret, daughter of Dr. Paul C. Venable.
- Juliet Irving married Rev. David W. Shanks.
- Margaret F. Irving married Thomas Rosser.
- Alexander Irving married Lockie T., daughter of Captain Henry Brown.
- Sarah C. Irving married Judge Asa Dickinson of Prince Edward County.
