AARON, William, W10287, Georgia, Franklin Co., pension application dtd 10/9/1832, aged 79 or 80 yrs. He enlisted in 10th Va. Regt., Va. Line, Regt. of Col. Stevens in Amherst Co., Va., Va. Regt., Va. Line, Regt. of Col. Stevens in Amherst Co., Va. and marched to headquarters at Bowbrook, N. J.; thence over the mountain where he came down with measles and was sent to hospital at Mendow, N. J. or Pa. Rejoining his Regt. at Germantown, Pa., had a relapse and was put in White Horse Hospital near Philadelphia, then sent to Pech Hall near Philadelphia; thence to Burlington, N. J. on bullet guard; thence to Princeton; thence Valley Forge, Pa. and furloughed. He reported back to Gen. Muhlenburg at Rocky Ridge, at which time his 3-yr. service expired. Georgia, Whitfield Co., application dtd 4/14/1857 of Rebecca Aaron, wid., stating she was aged 71 and married William Aaron 11/3/1829. Her husband died 10/1841 and she has since remained a widow. She married him in Franklin Co., Ga. and refers to proof of his service in the file.
ADAMS, Francis, W5198, Georgia, Henry Co., 12/18/1832, resident of 2d dist. of sd co., aged 69 on 11/24/1832, appeared in court, making his declaration, stating he volunteered about 7/1/1778, under Capt. Henry Coffee, joining Gen. Sumter's army and marching to Rocky Mt. where he fought in that battle. He later served under Capt. Marshall Jones and Lt. James Craig, and Capt. John Montgomery who was sick. Discharged Sept. or Oct. 1781. Statement from Gen. David Adams of Jasper Co., Ga., known to Gen. Blain of Congress, Stephen Miller, U. S. S., Rev. Ephraim Strickland, Parks W. Smith, George Tandy, William L. Gray ton, etc. of Henry Co. Ivy F. Stegall, clergyman and William L. Crayton, both of Henry Co., testify as to his character, etc. Statement of David Adams dtd 11/9/1833 Jasper Co., Ga. says he knew Francis Adams of S. C. during war and they then lived in Waxhaw settlement, now in Lancaster dist., as neighbors. 11/7/1842, letter to Commissioner from Francis Adams stating he was about to remove from Ga. to Mississippi, Knoxubee Co. Mississippi, Noxudee Co., 1/25/1843, Abram Adams testified for Francis Adams, no relationship given. Arkansas, Union Co. 7/22/1853, Mary Adams, aged 68 yrs., wid. of Francis Adams, states he d. Noxubee Co., Miss. 9/12/1846 and they were married in Lancaster dist., S. C. 11/27/1817. She was Mrs. Mary Ryan. She removed from Miss. 3 yrs. ago. South Carolina, Lancaster dist., James H. Witherspoon, Judge, Court of Ordinary, certifies that he married on 11/27/1817 Capt. Francis Adams to Mrs. Mary Ryan, who was the dau. of William Farrell, all of Lancaster dist.
ALBRITTON, John, #S31517, Georgia, Franklin Co., applied for pension 9/3/1832. Soldier was b. 12/6/1747 at New Castle, Hanover Co., Va. He was a resident of Goochland Co., Va. when he entered service in 1774 iN Capt. George's Co., Col. Charles Scott's Regt., Virginia Militia. They marched to Willial1lsburg "in search of Governor Dunsmore". Soldier lived Union District, S. C, when he enlisted in 1778 in Capt. Joshua Pelmore's Co., Col. Thomas Brandon's Regt. of S. C. Troops. He served at Battle of Cowpens, and later while guarding prisoners taken dur.1ng that battle, he was captured by the Tories. He escaped from captivity in 8/1781. After the war, he removed to Elbert Co., Ga., then to Franklin Co., Ga.
ALDREDGE, William, S916308, Georgia, Wilkes Co., appl. dtd 1833. Soldier was b. 1/26/1754 in Rowan Co., N. C. where enlisted in Spring of 1776 in Capt. David Caldwell's Co., Col. Fulsome's Regt., N. C. Troops "to protect the country from the Cherokee Indians". Also served in Capt. Caldwell's Co., Col. Francis Locke's Regt. against the Tories. In Winter of 1781 he served in Capt. hugh Ball's Co. of Horse; was io engagement with Tories near the Haw River. After the war, he relQo"ed to Spartanburg Dist., S. C. In 1793 he removed to Columbia Co., Ga., thence in 1796 to Wilkes Co.
ALEXANDER, George W8324, Georgia, Jasper Co. application dtd 7/25/1836, aged 73 the 1st of May next, statiag he eatered service 4/1/1781 at Charlotte, N. C. as Pvt. under Col. Wade Hampton, S. C. State Troops for 10 mos., co. of Capt. William Alexander on Congaree River, living at time in Mecklenburg Co., N. C. His discharge received from Capt. Alexander is lost. Remembers meeting Gen. Sumter whose family was staying in Mecklenburg Co., 2 to 3 miles from his father's house. He was b. on Sugar Creek, Mecklenburg Co., 5/1/1744, a record of his age having been given him by his father. About 20 yrs. ago, he removed to Jasper Co., Ga. Alabama, Benton Co., application dtd 2/2/1839 of George Alexander says he was on Pension Roll of Ga., and that his children are removing from Ga. to Ala. and he does not desire to remain in Ga. alone. Affidavit dtd 2/2/1839 Benton Co., Ala. of George L. Alexander that he was well acquaiated with George Alexander, pensioner, in Ga. Mississippi, Panola Co., application of Mrs. Rebecca Alexander, aged 81 yrs., dtd 5/24/1855, wid. of George Alexander, that she married him in Laurens Dist., S. C. 2/4/1810, her maiden name Rebecca Downs, by Jonathan Downs, J. P. Her husband died 8/7/1845 Panola Co., Miss. Affidavlt of Orville Harrison, Judge of Probate, Panola Co., Miss., that Mrs. Alexander lives about 10 miles from courthouse and is subject to sick spells, etc., therefore, he took her testimony at her home. Affidavit of Jonathan Downs and Charles T. Alexaader dtd 5/30/1855 Panola Co., Miss. that they have kaown Mrs. Alexaader for 45 yrs., and examined her bible as follows "G. Alexander and R. Downs were married 2/4/1810 George Alexander died 8/7/1845".

Soldier enlisted 1776 while resident of Camden District, South Carolina, served at various times of two or three mos. until 1782 (17 mos. in all), as Pvt. under Capt. Bratton and Col. Neal, Col. Lacy in S. C. Troops; was in the "Snow Campaign"; in battles of Congaree, Friday's Fort, Ashley, Rocky Mount, Sumter's Defeat and Biggins' Church. Soldier removed from York District, S. C. to Wilkes Co., Ga., then Franklin Co., Ga.; died 10/15/1831 Franklin Co., Ga. Soldier married 4/8/1783 in York Dist., S. C., Jane Fleming. Widow applied for pension 10/1/1844, resident of Capt. David's District, Franklin Co., Ga., aged 80 yrs.

BABER, James, W3754, Georgia, Gwinnett Co., application states he was b. Bedford Co., Va. 6/2/1762, enlisting in Capt. Adams' Co., Col. Charles Lynch's Va. Regt. 1779, age of 17, as pvt., 3 mos.; in 1780 enlisted 3 mos.; 1781, 2 mos. to guard land mines against tories and indians. Served at Petersburg, later guarded prison and magazines at Bedford Co., Va. Application of Mildred, wid. states she was b. Bedford Co., Va. 6/13/1762 and married 5/13/1785. Her husband died 7/17/1836 while visiting relatives in Heflin and Edwardsville, Ala. She died Gwinnett Co., Ga. 12/10/1846.
BALDREE, Isaac K., Georgia, Tattnall Co., applied for pension before the court 4/21/1833, stating he was b. Pitt Co., N. C. 1758; enlisted in Capt. John Inlow's Co., 12 mos., stationed Newbern, N. C., then Wilmington, 5 mos. Had engagement with tories near Wilmington. Later, returning home, was drafted, Capt. George Fautney's Co., in battle of Brier Creek, Ga. under Gen. Ash, served 11 mos. BANKSTON, Thomas, R477, Georgia, Randolph Co., application dtd 4/7/1835, aged 75 yrs., volunteered in 1778 under Capt. John Autry, Capt. Williamson and Col. B. Clark. In 1780 his father removed to N. C., he returned with him, joining an army raised in upper part of Montgomery Co., N. C. under Capt. Harris, Col. Lofton and Gen. Ruthersford. Discharged 1781, and returned to Wilkes Co., Ga., joining Capt. Ha1ms Co. at Ft. Demont. Served 2 yrs., 9 mos., lost his discharges. Affidavits of Abner Bankston, his bro., dtd 12/9/1834, Butts Co., Ga. who referred to Daniel (stated once as David) Bankston, the father of John Bankston, of the soldier, and of himself; of Peter Eldridge, clergyman; and Maj. Henderson, both of Butts Co., Ga. After the war, he lived Clarke and Jasper Cos., Ga.
BARNWELL, Robert, S31540, Georgia, Hall Co., appl. dtd 9/3/1832, aged 71 yrs., 9 mos. He enl. 8/1779 in Maj. Hathorn, Col. Andrew's Regt., while resident of York Co., S. C.; volunteered 8/1780 Gen. Sumter's army near Camden; in Sumter's defeat at Fishing Creek, S. C. He was b. Bucks Co., Pa. 12/1/1760 and lived York Co. S. C. when called. Lived Ga. last 40 yrs., abt. 30 yrs. in Franklin Co., Ga., last 10 yrs. in Hall Co. Was drafted 3 times, volunteering the other times.
BIGBIE, James N., Georgia, Harris Co., was granted pension 6/11/1847, at which time he was near the century mark, living in Harris Co., invalid pensioner in 1849, a Pvt. during Rev. War. BIGGS, Benjamin, W1366, Virginia, Ohio Co., apple of Priscilla Biggs, wid. dtd 12/6/1848, aged 70 yrs., stating she was dau. of Allen Metcalf and is wid. of Benjamin Biggs who entered service 4/16/1777 as Lt. in 13th Va. Regt., promoted to Capt. 12/1/1778, in 7th Va. Regt. til 11/15/1783. After war he was elected by Legislature a Brig. Gen. of State Militia of Va. which he held til about close of War of 1812 at which time he resigned. Affidavit of James Wodridge that 8/26/1795, Benjamin Biggs and Priscilla Metcalf were married by him, pursuant to a license from Clerk of Ohio Co. They had 10 children, 7 were living in 1848, in vicinity of West Liberty, Ohio Co., Va. Benjamin died 12/2/1823.
BLANDFORD, Clark, R927, Georgia, Early Co., application dtd 9/10/1838, aged 84, stating he enl. 1775 in Capt. John Montgomery's Co., Col. Benedict Arnold's Regt. in Quebec Expedition, 12 mos. before being captured, later paroled and returned to New Jersey. He entered N. J. Militia, served until end of war, first under Col. John Nelson, and Lt. Col. Scudder at taking of Bennets Island; in battles of Short Hills, Trenton, Springfield, Mud Island and Monmouth. Served as Sgt. and Sgt/Maj. of Nelson's Regt. and was wounded in action three times during the war. Following the war, he removed to Virginia from New Jersey, thence to Georgia, thence to Florida, later returning to Georgia.
BOSTICK, John, R1040, Georgia, Muscogee Co., appl. of Hillery B. Bostick dtd 7/31/1854, aged 82 yrs. that he was a cousin of Capt. John Bostick, late of Williamson Co., Tenn.; that they were boys together in Surry Co., N. C., although John was a few yrs. older than Hillery. John Bostick was a resident of Surry Co. during his service, engaged in militia service as Pvt. for several tours, after which he was appointed Capt. of a militia co. til close of war in 1782 or 1783. At close of war, Hillery's father removed to Ga. and settled in Richmond Co., but shortly afterwards, Capt. John Bostick came from Surry Co., N. C. to Ga. on a visit to see his uncle, Hillery's father, when he met a Miss Polly Jarvis in Richmond Co., Ga., to whom John was married. The date that John Bostick married Polly Jarvis is not recollected, but he knew it was several years before Hillery married Elizabeth Jarvis, a relation of Capt. John Bostick's wife in yr. 1798. After the marriage, they moved back to N. C., then Williamson Co., Tenn. in 1808, where John remained til his death in 1850. At time of John's death, he left several children: Hardin P. Bostick and others. Capt. Bostick's wife had died sometime before he did, and Hardin P. Bostick was exr. for his father. 3/8/1853, Davidson Co., Tenn., Hardin P. Bostick, aged 48, applies for benefits, stating he was son and exr. of John Bostick, decd, who was Capt. of Cavalry in the Regt. of Dist. of Salisbury of Lt. Col. Stokes, appointed Capt. 3/20/1783 by Gov. Richard Caswell of N. C. John Bostick died 9/20/1850 Williamson Co., Tenn., left no wid., but following named children: James A. Bostick, Bathenia Patton, Elizabeth Bell, Jane Wilson, Christina Coltart and Hardin P. Bostick.
BOWEN, Elijah, W25259, Georgia, Tattnall Co., apple dtd 10/9/1832, states he was b. Duplin Co., N. C. 1758 and is 74 yrs. old. He entered service 1782, a draft of Capt. Robert Merritt, Duplin Co., N. C., Col. Kenan, marched against tories on Black and South Rivers, from there a guard over some tories, then Duplin Co. to guard some prisoners, 2-3 mos. Then to Mulberry Grove in Hanover Co., joining Gen. Rutherford; thence Wilmington, back to Duplin til peace was proclaimed. Since war has lived Tattnall Co., Ga. for 30 yrs. His declaration dtd 8/12/1833 states he was b. 3/11/1759 Duplin Co., N. C. and after war removed to Effingham Co., now Bulloch Co., Ga., but for 30 yrs. has lived Tattnall Co. 2/6/1857 Tattnall Co., apple of Sabra Bowen, sid. for bounty land; she married Elijah Bowen in sd co. 12/1804 by Jesse Bird, J. P. as Sabra Little, and her husband died 12/31/1837.
BOWEN, Samuel (Capt), W12321, Georgia, Elbert Co., apple dtd 1/21/1833, aged 76, vol. 8/1779 as Pvt., Capt. Nathan Clifton, Col. John Little, 9 mos., disc. Montgomery Co. (formerly Anson), N. C.; enl. Salisbury, N. C., marched to Moore's Cre4ek, N. C., thence Charleston, S. C.; at siege of Charleston, Spring 1780 and there surrendered as prisoner of war. Shortly afterwards, he broke away and returned to his home in N. C. Enl. as Capt. of Militia of Lt. Horse, Col. George Davidson and Col. William Lofton in 1781, 8 mos. Fought Tories at Deep River, N. C. where wounded in arm; 2 days :.ater fought, receiving wound in left. Went to Crowning Creek in Anson Co. and fought Tories, then discharged. He was b. Montgomery Co. (formerly Anson) N. C. 8/16/1756. Since the war lived in Montgomery Co. until 1796 when removed to York Dist., S. C. where he lived until 1811; then removed to Wilkes Co., Ga. where he lived until 1826 when he removed to Elbert Co., Ga. Mrs. nancy Bowen, widow, Pike Co., Ga. 4/4/1854, age 52, states husband died 8/2/1843, 87 yrs. old in Pike Co., Ga. and they were married in Elbert Co. 1/1826. She has lived in Pike Co. for 12 yrs. In supplemental declaration, widow made 5/15.1854, she said she married 3/1835 instead of 1/1826. (Note: Elbert Co. Marriages -Samuel Bowen to Nancy Freeman 3/17/1835).
BOWEN, Stephen, W5853, Georgia, Tattnall Co., application dtd 10/11/1825 as indigent soldier, age 68, lived said county more than 20 years. That he was b. Duplin Co., N. C.; enl. 1778 under Lt. Curtis Ivey, 5th N. C. Regt., Col. John Armstrong; enl. 1/1779 at Purysburg, S. C. under Gen. Lincoln and Gen. Moultrie; that he was in battle of Stone River 1/20/1779, and returned home because of sickness where he remained until 5/1780 when he joined army just defeated of Gen. Gates. Again furloughed for sickness, returned home, then joined army at Bluford's Bridge in Hanover Co., N. C. Applicant has helpless wife, 66 yrs. old and infirm, and he is afflicted with kidney trouble and is badly ruptured.
BRAND, William, S31577, Georgia, Walton Co., apple states he was b. 5/23/1756 Edgecombe Co., N. C., enl. as Pvt. in Continental Regt., Capt. Richard Shipp, serving twice, once for 5 mos. in 1780, and 3 mos. in 1781. He d. 12/9/1834 Loganville, Walton Co., Va. Wife, Sarah, whom he married 8/16/1781.
BRANTLEY, Amos, S38569, Georgia, Hancock Co., Ga. applied for pension 1/1/1827. Soldier was b. 9/11/1759, enl. in N. C. 5/1782 as Pvt., Capt. Bacot's Co., Col. Archibald Lytle's N. C. Regt., discharged 8/1783. Children: Washington Hamilton Brantley, age 18; Thomas JeffersoN Brantley, age 14; Luntsford Whitaker Brantley, age 11; Sarah Brantley, age 9; Martha Ann Brantley, age 7; Titler Brantley, age 5; Marsha Brantley, age 12 mos.
BROOKS, Micajah, W27694, Georgia, Paulding Co., apple dtd 8/19/1850 of Micajah Brooks, Sr., age 89, stating he was an orphan boy(and his mother said age 14) and was hired out to a widow woman by the name of Locklin in N. C. and sent by her to Ramsour's Mill and while he was at the mill, Benjamin Few carne there in a co. of 20 or 30 others and came to him, and slapped him on the head, said to him: "My buck, don't you want to go with me and serve your country?" And he answered, "Gladly." Few then got the miller to send the horse and bag back to the widow Locklin and he then served under Few as a scout on the Ga. frontier, in Wilkes and Warren Co.'s. Deponent never had an education, was a young and wild boy and never paid any attention to dates, but entered service under Capt. George Barber and Col. Elijah Clarke in Wilkes Co., Ga. as volunteer; was in battle of Kettle Creek and Little River. Was in Gen. Greene's army until British were in possession of Charleston, S. C. and on Sullivan's Island, returning to Wilkes Co. to join Capt. John Hill's Co. Soldier was b. Chatham Co., N. C., but has no record of his age, his mother told him that it was burnt up with his grandfather's house and she informed him that he was born the same day that Dennis McSwin was born and in the settlement and that if he could see him he could tell him his age. He says from what McSwin (McSwain) told him, he will be 89 yrs. old the 25th of next Dec. He was living Chatham Co., N. C. hen he joined army. 5/31/1869 Polk Co., Ga., Margaret T. Brooks, age 63, widow, states husband d. 6/15/1862; that she has resided in Polk Co., Ga. since 1/1/1861, subsisting by er own labor, carding, spinning, weaving, and her decd husband was last paid his pension 3/1861. BROOKS, Elisha, W9741, soldier vol. 2 mo. as Pvt., Capt. John Wallace's Co., S. C. Troops; served 12 mos. as Lt., same co. Was at siege of Ninety-Six. Soldier d. 11/3/1804 S. C. Elisha Brooks married 1/12/1786 in Edgefield Dist., S. C. Nancy Butler (b. 9/22/1769), dau. of James Butler. Widow filed for pension 6/1845, Abbeville Dist., S. C. (still alive in 1852). She and husband had eight children.

Adams, Maj. Adams, Gen. Smallwood, 7th Md. Regt. Was in battles of Monmouth and Camden where wounded, and Cowpens; taken prisoner by British, but released by a regular exchange.

Hanover Co., St. Paul's Parish, Va. 6/5/1758, and while ~ resident of Mecklenburg Co., Va., was drafted in 1778, 2 mos. to serve Capt. James Anderson's Co., Col. John Burton's Regt. Drafted 1780, 18 mos. Capt. Richard Seiflower's Co., Col. William Davis' Regt., later Capt. Scott's Co.; drafted 1781, 2 mos. He lived Mecklinburg Co. Va. until a yr. or two after the Rev. when he removed to Wilkes Co., Ga., nolw Elbert Co. Removed to Shelby Co., Va. in 1837. CARITHERS, Robert, W23779, Georgia, Madison Co., app1. dtd 9/3/1832. He was b. in Lancaster C., Pa. 3/30/1744. Lived in 96th Dist., S. C. when entered war as Pvt. 5/1781, when he recd a Captain's commission, which he held to end of war. Served under Capt. Robert Anderson, Col. Perkins, General Morgan. In several skirmishes with Tories by whom he was wounded in thigh at the Siege of 96. Soldier married Mary Luckie on 4/18/1782 in Abbevi11e Dist., S. C. 10/4/1832 in Madison Co., Ga. Affidavit by Amos Carithers 11/12/1852, age 32, as admr of Est. of Mrs. Mary Carithers, widow of Robert. Mary d. 2/8/1842, leaving children: Mary and Margaret. Other children: Elizabeth b. 1/30/1783, James b. 10/25/1784, Mary b. 9/11/1786 and b. 9/1788.
CARTER, Silas, R1758, Georgia, Washington Co. Silas Carter was born in 1752, Orange Co., North Carolina. He was a resident of Lexington District, South Carolina when he entered the war. About 1784, he removed from South Carolina to Onslow Co., North Carolina where he lived until 1818 when he removed to Washington Co., Ga.

CLOUD, Ezekiel, W6920, Georgia, Henry Co., appl. dtd 12/18/1832, was b. 3/14/1762, enl. Wilkes Co., Ga. 1778, served til 1779, abt 8 mos. under Col. John Dooley, Ga. Militia; enl. as Pvt. 9/1780, Capt. Daniel Gunnell, Capt. George Walton, Col. Elijah Clarke's Regt., was at siege of August ain 1780, had skirmishes at Shire's Ferry on Broad River, was in battle of Blackstock and 4/1781 in engagement on Little River in S. C. Enl. under Capt. Joseph Nail, was at siege of Augusta in 1781, fought Creek indians at Ft. Hinton, Ga., served til 5/1782. He d. 5/30/1850. Wid., Elizabeth.
COLLINS, John, W6735, Georgia, Hall Co., appl. dtd 1/27/1832, aged 73 as of Dec. 9th previously. 4/1776 the Cherokee indians broke out on S. C. frontiers and he vol. 5/10/1776 as Pvt., Militia, Capt. John McAfee, 6 mos., Col. Neal's Regt., marched to Seneca River, Ft. Independence, having frequent skirmishes; thence to the middle settlement of the Cherokee Nation where they defeated the indians. 10/1776 he went to his father's who lived in Camden Dist, S. C. and remained til 10/1778. Enl. as substitute for Moses Kemp, Pvt., Capt. Thomas Barron, marching to Brier Cr. where Gen. Ashe lay, til 3/17/1779, 2 mos. ,10 days. 1778 and 2 mos. 17 days 1779. C., then Savannah, Ga., joining Gen. Lincoln, then to Brier Cr., to Bacon's Bridge, Ashley River, 3 mos. as Pvt. Was in N. C. Vols. under Capt. John G. Lowman, Col. Archibald Lytle and apptd Sgt-Maj. 12/1, taken prisoner at fall of Charleston 5/12th. Paroled Lincoln Co., N. C. After being home abt 2 mos., was taken by a parcel of tories and carried to where Col. Ferguson 1 ay with British, charged with violating his parole, found guilty, and sentenced to hang. But by a providential occurrence, he effected his escape, seeking refuge in army, and was at battle of Guilford, at Tarleton's defeat at Cowpens, and at Ferguson's defeat at Kings Mtn. Afterwards, he went to Henry Co., Va. where he substituted for William Jones, 2 mos. and was given rank of Lt., serving as Adjutant, marched to Petersburg, Va., but soon driven from there by British. Enl. under Col. Penn 4/12/1781, dis. 10/24/1781, at battle of Jamestown. Returned to his old home community in S. C. where reared til 3/1782 when he vol. for S. C. Militia, as Pvt., 2 mos., elected Capt., then marched to Orange burg Ct. House, then Four Holes Bridge, later Dorchester, then Bacon's Bridge, continued as Capt. til 10/1782. He was b. Frederick Co., Md. 12/9/1760 and at time of service lived Camden Dist., now York Dist., S. C., remained in S. C. abt 4 yrs. after war, then moved to Elbert Co., Ga. for 9 yrs. Removed to Franklin Co., Ga. for 18 yrs., or til 1813, when he moved to Hall Co. where he lived in 1834. 1/31/1853, Cobb Co., Ga., Mrs. Phebe Collins, wid., aged 82, states she was Phebe Sailors and married John Collins, Sr. in Burke Co., Ga. 11/30/1786, and that husband died Acworth, Ga. 3/8/1852, aged 91 yrs. old.
COLLINS, Joseph, R2179, Georgia, Upson Co., apple dtd 8/27/1833, was b. 5/15/1739 Rowan Co., N. C., in spring 1777 lived Wilkes Co., Ga. and enl. as Capt., serving 1777-1780 under Col. John Dooley and Col. Elijah Clarke, was in several excursions against indians and tories, at the two sieges of Augusta, where wounded with musketball passing through his arm, and at siege of Savannah. He d. 8/25/1838 Upson Co. His surviving children in 1853 were: Joseph, b. abt 1803, Enoch, Thomas, and Nancy who married Benjamin Cochran.

Few, Sumpter, Morgan and Wayne. Joined Col. John Twiggs' command at Augusta, Ga. spring 1779, served til end of war in 1783. Was living in Burke Co., Ga., now Jefferson Co., in 1778 and that while at Col. John Twiggs' Mill in sd co. to get some corn ground, was taken by tories and carried to Savannah, Ga., put in prison and kept by British til Jan. or Feb. 1779 til 4/15/1779, when he and a man by name of Moore left, lahing in woods by day, travelling by night, til they came to Hudson's Ferry on Savannah River, when deponent saw a man he knew from Glynn Co., Ga., this man told Capt. Stephen Johnson who he was and he had him set across the river and fed, as they were nearly starved. He then proceeded to Augusta, Ga., joining Col. John Twiggs, summer of 1779-the British had established a store at Ogeechee Br., about 20 miles from Savannah, to trace with indians and tories, guarded by a British Sgt. and 12 men. Col. Twiggs took Capt. David Imanuel and William Young and abt 30 men of us mounted our horses, headed to Ogeechee River, captured them and retreated up river about 4 mi. to Butler's plantation with prisoners. Abt 2 o'clock the same day were attacked at Butler's plantation by Capt. Muller and Lt. Swanton with 39 men. Returned to post, Beach Island, abt 120 miles from store. Col. Twiggs took his family to Va. from Burke Co. and Col. Elijah Clarke took command on Tiger River, S. C. Sept. 1781, Col. Clarke attacked Col. Brown at Augusta, Ga. Col. Crugar came to Brown's relief from 96, S. C. 9/11/1781, after being in battle through the day, deponent went to see his mother for a few hrs., who had moved out of Burke Co. to Butler's Cr., abt 6 mi. from Augusta. She said to him, "My son, you have been in many battles, and you are 16 yrs. old this very day." Deponent says he is son of Joseph Darcey who was b. in N. C. 1764 or 1765, that all records of his decd father was destroyed by tories in Rev. War and his own papers burned up in his house in Decatur Co., Ga. in 1830. His bros. who lived to be men were: James, Joseph, Benjamin, William, and Joel Darcey. Joseph Darcey lived in N. C., was captured on Brushy Cr. by tories and carried to Charleston, S.C. and died in prison ship 1780 or 1781. As a lad, he was bound out to Andrew Peck to learn hatter's trade, who was a German, and finding difficulty in calling his name, changed it to William Smith. He was b. Loudoun Co., Va. 4/1/1764 and lived at Leesbury at time of service. After the war, moved to Fauquier Co., Va., then to Ga. in 1808 where he has lived ever since.

C. abt 1768 and was married three yrs. before her first child was born; her maiden name was Grissel Dixon, that she never remarried, and moved to DeKa1b Co., Ga. after death of her husband where she remained for sometime with her children. She d. 8/1848 Benton Co., Ala. at home of her youngest child, Jane Barnett. The children then surviving were: Margaret Turner, William Steele, John Steele, Moses Steele, Jane Barnett and Isaac Steele, Jr. His mother told him they lost their crops because Isaac Steel was away in the war, under command of Capt. Moses Liddel.

He was pensioned 12/13/1786, served under Capt. Micajah Williamson's Co. of Mounted Militia of Col. Elijah Clarke's Regt. in Ga., that he has lived Wilkes Co., Ga. for last 47 yrs. Before that, he was in Bute Co., N. C. 4/15/1842, letter from Mrs. Catharine Whatley, wid., to Hon. R. W. Habersham, Ga. Senator, stating that abt time of Rev., her father, James Ang1in,moved from N. C. to Ga., settling near Washington, Ga., bringing with him 7 sons and Catharine, "a motherless dau. abt 13 yrs. old." Her bros. were all older than she. Her father was native of Ireland. She had lived 5-6 yrs. in Wilkes Co., Ga. when she married Samuel Whatley, a boy abt her age, whose father had been killed by indians at Cherokee Corner on Clarke-Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Line when Samuel was 14 yrs. old, the eldest child. During Rev., her husband served under Elijah Clarke, was at siege of Augusta and served under Col. Elijah Clarke when he was shot in left arm. They were betrothed before he left on S. C. Campaign, and when he returned home with his wounds, were married before old Squire Biddle in Wilkes Co. She has lived 45 yrs. in Wilkes Co. after her marriage and moved to Pike Co. after Samuel's death to plantation of her son, James Whatley, where he has res. for 9-10 yrs. She had 5 sons "still alive and Ga. citizens". She married Samuel in Wilkes Co., Ga. in 1781 or 1782. She is 80 yrs. old, lived in Ga. 67 yrs., in Wilkes Co. 55 yrs., and Pike Co., 9 yrs. She states her husband was loyal to Whig cause and before he reached majority was twice frozen, once hung and twice shot while in defense of liberty. Henry Anglin, Sr., who served with Whatley under Micajah Williamson, testified that Whatley was wounded at Long Canes in S. C., taken prisoner 4-5 mos., came home with wounds allover him, 2/13/1844, Jackson Co.
