Roger Parker Saunders of Liberty & McIntosh Counties

Roger Parker Saunders (died 1795) came from South Carolina where he had served as an officer under General Nathaniel Greene and General Anthony Wayne in the American army during the Revolutionary War. He owned plantations in South Carolina and in Georgia. He was married to Amarinthia Lowndes, who married after his death, John Champneys. Captain Saunders owned property with Major Pierce Butler in Washington County, and this is where the name of Sandersville originated. He also owned an island in the Altamaha River.
