James Maxwell of Liberty County
James Maxwell settled in Midway, Liberty County, in 1759, along with the other Puritan settlers who had removed from Dorchester, South Carolina. When he petitioned the council for a land grant of 1,850 acres, he stated that he had a wife, three children and 114 slaves. In 1754, he peitioned for Elizabeth St. Julyian, widow, stating that she had sufficient number of hands, and wanted 5,400 acres on the southside of the North Branch of the Newport River. 1,000 acres were also granted to his son, John Maxwell, bounding the lands of John Davis and John McDaniel. The family prospered on their plantation at Midway, intermarrying with the other Puritans in the area, and were buried in the Midway Church burialyard.
