Raymond Demere of Harrington Hall

Harrington Hall Captain Raymond Demere, a wealthy hugenot and merchant, was born in 1742 in Georgia, and died January of 1829. His home was on St. Simon's Island, near that of General Oglethorpe (which would be just outside of the town of Frederica, on Military Road), and was enclosed with cassina hedges and known to be "conspicious for its beauty and comfort". In 1760, he was granted 530 addition acres. He had a son, Raymond, who was thrown from his horse in May of 1791 and died, while visiting Major Hardee's plantation on the Great Ogeechee River. When Captain Demere died, he named in his will, Betsy Demere ..."but the porre little girl she is not my daughter but as she was born under my Roffe I was always willing for to do something for her so that I would not have her to be called a Bastard", leaving her 80 pounds sterling.
