Andrew Carnegie, the wealthiest man in America, was born on November 25, 1835 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, and died on August 11, 1919 at Shadow Brook in Lenox, Massachusetts. He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1848, taking a job in a bobin factory, and eventually worked his way through the ranks of a telegraph company. He build the famous Carnegie Steel Company in Pittsburg. He was a Scottish-American industrialist which led to the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century.
With the fortune he made from business among others he built Carnegie Hall, later he turned to philanthropy and interests in education, founding the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
Carnegie gave most of his money to establish many libraries,including the one in downtown Atlanta.

which was donated to the National Park Foundation by Carnegie family members in 1971. Their contribution,
as well as funds from supporting foundations, helped win Congressional approval for establishing Cumberland
Island National Seashore.
