Morton Hall



John McPherson Berrien (1781-1856) owned a plantation on the Savannah River known as Morton Hall. He was a practicing Savannah attorney who represented Major Pierce Butler and others to retried Negroes taken by the British in 1815. Judge Berrien was born in Rocky Hill, New Jersey and served as attorney general under President Jackson 1829 to 1831; Princeton College 1796; admitted to the bar 1799; served in War of 1812; U.S. senator 1822 to 1823, 1829, 1852; a leader of the American (or Know-Nothing) party 1852 to 1856. When he married Eliza Anciaux in 1803, their marriage settlement vested Morton Hall in both the husband and wife.
