Woodward of Atlanta
James G. Woodward was born 14 January 1845 in Georgia, died 29 August 1923. In 1880 he was a newspaperman and politician, later became City Councilmen serving nine years, an Alderman; then was elected Mayor of Atlanta in 1899, serving years. The 1880 census lists him as a printer and he made his living in the newsrooms of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. In 1904 he was eligible to run for Mayor again. He won the 1908 democratic primary but was arrested for public intoxication less than a month before the December general election. Thus, he was defeated by Robert Maddox. The New York Times published an article on this humiliating defeat. He served his third and fourth terms following Courtland Winn. Trying for a fifth term as Atlanta mayor, he ran (and lost) in September 1922, a year before his death. James Woodward was married to Emma, the sister of Mary Milican. Emma was born 1838 in Atlanta. They had one known child, a daughter, Alfronnie Woodward, born 1879 in Atlanta.
