Wise of Bryan County


Legend. John Wise , chr. 16 Nov 1617 in St. Martins, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, migrated from Sydenham, Devonshire, England and settled in Clifton, Accomack County, Virginia which became the family seat for many generations. The lineage into Georgia began with William Wise, son of above John whose son was John Wise (1655-1717); whose son was John Wise (1699-1767).

John Wise, son of the above John Wise (1699-1767) was born 27 Jul 1723 in Clifton, Accomack County, Virginia where he died in March of 1769; married Margaret Douglas (1736-1808).

William Wise, son of John Wise (above), was born 31 Dec 1755 in Clifton, died 13 May 1816 in Bulloch County, Georgia and was married to Margaret. They resided for awhile in Barnwell County, South Carolina before removing to Bulloch, Bryan and Brooks Counties, Georgia. Issue: Preston Wise (above), born 1785 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, died 1868 in Bryan County, Georgia was married (1) on 22 Jul 1808 to Mary Ann (Amy) Jones, born 2 Mar 1789 in Jones County, North Carolina, died 1 Nov 1859 in Bryan County, Georgia. He married (2) Margaret Lee on 16 Nov 1807 in Bulloch County (license). Issue:
  1. Elizabeth Wise, born 1812 in Bryan County, died 1857 in Bulloch County, Georgia, buried in the McElveen Family Cemetery.
  2. Jacob Wise, born 12 March 1812 in Bryan County, died 15 Sept 1891 in Bryan County, buried in the Little Creek Cemetery. He was married (a) in 1835 in Bryan County to Mary Ann Byrd (Jan 1815-24 Dec 1869), buried at Clyde, Bryan County, buried in the Clyde Cemetery. He married (2) Rebecca Brown on 12 Feb 1875 in Bryan County. Issue:
    1. Henry Wise, born 15 Jan 1836, died 1 Apr 1883 in Bryan County.
    2. Harriet Wise, born 1839 in Bryan County.
    3. James Gordon Wise, born 20 May 1839, died 1 Sept 1922 in Bryan County.
    4. William Wise, born Jan 1840, died 20 May 1916 in Bryan County, buried in the Clyde Cemetery.
    5. Harvey Wise, born 1842 Bryan County.
    6. John Wise, born 3 Apr 1844, died 27 Jul 1910 in Clyde, Bryan County.
    7. Malakiah W. Wise, born Mar 1846 in Bryan County, died 20 May 1916 in Bryan County, buried Little Creek Cemetery. (see below)

    9. General Gwin Wise, born 16 Sept 1851 in Clyde, Bryan County, died 12 Jan 1912 in Arcola, Bulloch County, buried in the Stinson Cemetery.

    12. Newton Wise, born 27 May 1858, died 19 Nov 1919 Bryan County, buried Little Creek Cemetery. Wise, Elizabeth Horn, born 7 Jul 1861, died 23 June 1932, buried Clyde Cemetery in Bryan County. Issue: Infant daughter 17 Feb 1892-22 Feb 1892.

Malakiah Wise, son of Jacob Wise, was born Mar 1846 in Bryan County, died 20 May 1916 in Bryan County, buried Little Creek Cemetery. Wife, Cornelia, was born 15 July 1850 in Georgia, died 20 June 1913, buried in the Clyde Cemetery in Ft. Stewart, Georgia. The family resided in Bryan County. Issue:[1]
