Wingfield of Virginia & Wilkes County

 

The Wingfield family seat is in Tickencote, Rutlandshire, England.  It begins with Thomas Wingfield, the son of John Wingfield and his wife, Mary (Cromwell) Wingfield, born 29 March 1664 in that parish, died 19 December 1720 in New Kent County, Virginia. He was married to Mary Owens. Their children were: Ruth, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas (1693-1785)  and John Wingfield.

 

Thomas Wingfield, born 1693 in New Kent County, Virginia, died 1785 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Garland (1702-1727), a daughter of Edward Garland and his wife, Martha Jane (Hensley) Garland.  Their issue:

 

 

I.     John Wingfield, Revolutionary War Patriot, was born 20 July 1723 in Virginia and died 3 February 1793 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  He was married to Frances Oliver Buck (born 5 May 1725, died Wilkes County 25 February 1795) in Hanover County, Virginia on 4 December 1744.[1]

 

He was in Wilkes County, Georgia after the Indian ceded their lands in 1777.

 

Wilkes County Deed Book CC (1787), page 67.  Isaac Williams and his wife, Sarah, deed to John Wingfield, 50 acres on Beaverdam Creek where Wingfield now lives, known as The Falls. 23 June 1787.  Test:  J. Derricott, J. M. Walker. 

 

The LWT of John Wingfield signed 10 March 1791, probated 15 January 1794 in Wilkes County. He did not mention his wife, however, named all of his children.  To son, Garland, “the land whereon I live, about 660 acres”, to son, John, holding a deed to the residue.  To daughter, Ann Wingfield, a slave (Sall).  To daughter, Frances Meriwether, a slave (Amy).  He had loaned a slave to each of his daughters, Rebecca Darracott and Pattey Foster and as well as to his son, John, which slaves are directed to be returned to the estate.  The wife to have the use of the home plantation and at her death to be divided among all children, to-wit: Thomas, Garland, John, Sarah, Anne, Francis, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebeckah and Patty.  The land in Virginia to be divided among the daughters.

 

The Returns for his estate were filed 1798, with receipts from John Darracott and J. Hardin Foster (1796) for their part of a sale of a tract of land in Virginia left to his daughters; of David Meriwether and Sarah Pettus for their legacy in a tract according to the LWT; of Hope Hull for his wife’s legacy; of Edward Butler for his wife’s legacy; of William Terrell’s bond for Virginia land “of which my wife had one seventh part.”  Order of Thomas Terrell’s executors to Thomas and John Wingfield, executors for their part of the legacy in landed property.  A division of slaves dated March 1798 went to distributees: Garland, Thomas and John Wingfield, Mary Terrell, Patsy Foster, Sarah Pettus, Fanny Merriwether, Nancy Hull, Elizabeth Butler and Rebeccah Darracott.[2]

A.                   Thomas Wingfield, Revolutionary War Soldier who served on the Virginia Continental Line, was born 17 September 1745 in Virginia, died Wilkes County, Georgia on 24 July 1797. He married in 1768, Elizabeth Nelson (born 15 September 1749, died 27 November 1802).[3] Issue:

 

1.  Samuel Wingfield, born 30 January 1772, died 6 September 1820 in Wilkes County. He was married on 15 November 1800 in Wilkes County to Catherine Nelson.   Charles Wingfield was administrator.  A partition of his real estate located on the Little River.  Wife, Lavinia.  The only distributees mentioned on 6 September 1821 were: Archibald S. and William B. Wingfield, sons.  Lavina Wingfield gave a receipt for herself and as guardian of Frances A. Wingfield; of Archibald S. Wingfield for his legacy; of William C. Wingfield for his legacy, all in part, January 1823.  Archibald S. Wingfield and Fielding Ficklen and wife, Frances A., formerly Frances A. Wingfield vs. Charles Wingfield, administrator of Samuel Wingfield Estate: Interrogatories to Francis West pertaining to two rolls of money which Charles Wingfield, administrator, told Francis West was among Thomas Chivers, deceased’s estate of which Samuel Wingfield was an executor.  10 February 1831.[4]  Issue:

 

a.  Archibald Simpson Wingfield, born 26 May 1801 in Wilkes County, died 12 July 1861 in Washington, Wilkes County. He married (1) Sarah Screven (2) Mary B. Leonard on 18 April 1822 in Wilkes County (3) Jane Ann Barnett on 17 December 1835 in Wilkes County.

 

b.  William B. Wingfield.

 

c.  Frances A. Wingfield married Fieldiing Ficklen.    

 

2.     Mary Wingfield, born 17 July 1774.

3.     Thomas Wingfield, born 3 May 1777.

4.     John Wingfield, born 21 March 1780. His LWT dated 11 November 1821, probated 1 January 1822, Wilkes County. He left his watch to Archibald S. Wingfield; Polly Terrell, $500.00.  The balance of his estate to be equally divided between his brothers and sisters, with Samuel and Thomas Wingfield to be executors.

5.      Elizabeth Wingfield, born 1782.

6.      Charles Edward Wingfield, born 14 April 1784.

7.      Frances Nelson Wingfield, born 7 July 1787.

 

B.   Mary Wingfield, born 15 October 1747, married Peter Terrell.

 

C.  Elizabeth Wingfield, born 30 August 1752, died 20 July 1823 in Wilkes County, married Edward Butler.

 

D.  Sarah Garland Wingfield, born 28 August 1754, married Stephen Peters.

 

E.  Charles Wingfield, born 17 January 1756.

 

F.  Garland Wingfield, born 17 October 1757, married Mrs. Sarah Poullain.

 

G.  Ann Wingfield, born 22 May 1759, married Rev. Hope Hull.

 

H.  John Wingfield, Jr., was born 31 July 1761, married Mary Darracott.  His LWT was probated on 8 March 1802. To his son, Garland, he left his plantation known as Solitude.  To sons, Overton and John, the home plantation, upon the death of wife, Mary. The land in Jackson and Clarke Counties to be sold and equally divided among the children as they marry or come of age.  Wife, Mary, and brother, Garland Wingfield and Hope Hull, executors.Wilkes County Returns for 1816 named Mary Wingfield as executrix and paid: John Terrell, guardian of John L., Sarah G., Nancy O. and Overton Wingfield; paid Elizabeth Wingfield part of legacies.   In 1817, paid Garland, Frances and Elizabeth D. Wingfield part of legacies.  In 1818, paid John L., Sarah G., Elizabeth D. Wingfield; John Terrell, guardian of Overton Wingfield, paid Lucius de Yampert his legacy, paid “myself” as executrix; Frances Wingfield’s legacy and paid myself legacy as coming by my wife.” Returns for his estate in Wilkes County 1830-1831.  Charles Wingfield, administrator.  Receipt of Archibald S. Wingfield, administrator of William C. Wingfield; of Joel W. Terrell for his wife, Elizabeth’s interest; of A. S. Wingfield for his part, 1831; of William C. Wingfield’s part in John Wingfield’s estate (1831); of John W. Butler for his part of Elizabeth Wingfield’s share of John Wingfield’s estate and his part of John Wingfield’s estate (1831); of Mary S. Wingfield for her part of Elizabeth Wingfield’s interest in John Wingfield’s estate (1831); of Zacheus Butler, guardian for the use of Patsy W. Wingfield (1831) and of John G. Colbert in full of his legacy from John Wingfield (1831).[5]   Issue:

2.  John L. Wingfield.  LWT dated 28 February 1835, probated 5 May 1835, Wilkes County. To wife, Caroline, the residence in Washington, Georgia, furniture, carriage, horses, slaves.  The residue to be divided between “my two children” (minors), not named.  Mentioned the possibility of another child.  Brother: Garland Wingfield, executor.

5.  Nancy O. Wingfield.

6.  Elizabeth D. Wingfield married Joel Terrell.

I.   Frances Wingfield, born 20 February 1763, died 24 November 1820 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, married David Meriwether.

 

J.   Rebecca Wingfield, born 12 July 1763, married John Darracott.

 

K.  Martha Wingfield, born 30 May 1767, married John Foster.

 

II.   Mary Wingfield, born on the Anna River, Hanover County, Virginia.

 

II.   John Wingfield, born 20 July 1723 on the Anna River, Hanover County, Virginia, and died 3 February 1793 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

 

III.  Elizabeth Wingfield.

 

IV.  Thomas Wingfield, Revolutionary War Soldier, was born 1733 on the Anna River, Hanover County, Virginia, died 22 July 1806 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  Issue:

 

A.      John Wingfield.

 

B.       Sarah G. Wingfield married Miss Powell.

 

C.      Mary Wingfield married Richard Worsham (born 1746 in Virginia, died 1826 in Wilkes County. He drew a pension for his services during the American Revolution, as Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Regiment.  Issue:

 

                                                                                      i.      Elizabeth Worsham (1791-1836) married (2) Samuel Barnett (1775-1843), the son of William Barnett, Revolutionary War Soldier and his wife, Jean (Jack) Barnett.[6]
