White of Clarke County
Captain James White was born 28 August 1839 at White Hall, Georgia, the son of John and Janet (Richards) White, natives of County Antrim, Ireland. He attended the Scudder School in Athens, then attended the University of Georgia. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and was made Captain of Company A, Adams Battalion. After the war, he engaged in the cotton business and was cashier of the National Bank of Athens, as well as being connected with the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company, the Athens Savings Bank, the Columbia Fire Insurance Company, the Southern Insurance Company, the Athens Electric Railroad Company, the Georgia Manufacturing Company, and the High Shoals Manufacturing Company. Captain White married on 25 March 1884 at Waynesboro to Miss Julia Devereaux Ashton (born 3 October 1866), the daughter of John Devereaux and his wife, Sarah Janette (Roberts) Ashton. Issue:
- James White, Jr., married Miss Agnes G. Hood of Commerce, Georgia.
- Rosena Ashton White, married William Francis Bradshaw of Pudacah, Kentucky.
