Wellbourne of Wilkes & Columbia Counties

 

William Wellbourne was born 1733 in North Carolina, died 1792 in Georgia. He served in the American Revolution as a Private in the North Carolina Militia. He was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He married Hepzibah Stearns, daughter of Isaac Stearns and Rebecca Johnson.

X.        Elias Wellbourne, was born 1759 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He served as a Private in the North Carolina Militia, was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War Soldier, son of William Wellbourne of Wilkes County and his wife, Mary Marshall. His LWT dated 5 July 1836, probated 16 November 1836, Columbia County. He drew in the 1827 Land Lottery of Georgia, and received a pension for his service.

 

Columbia County Deeds

 

On 14 August 1795, Quit Claim Deed, by the LWT of Daniel Marshall, minister, who left 50 acres on the Augusta Road and Kiokee Creek….the heirs signed a release to Abraham Marshall, Daniel, John, Levi, Solomon, Joseph, Moses and Zacheus Marshall, with Elias Wellbourne signing in right of his wife, Mary Marshall.

 

On 25 March 1802, Abraham Jones deeded to Elias Wellbourne of Columbia County for $480.00, 120 acres, known as the “Old Hall tract”, adjoining John Chennault.

 

Elias Wellbourne applied for a pension from Columbia County, Georgia on 3 December 1832, aged 73. He said that he entered service in 1778 under Captain Hines, from Randolph County, North Carolina, part of the time being a substitute for Mr. Cheeks (about 3 months). He was in many skirmishes with the Tories. After the first of the year of 1780, he and his father were drafted in Wilkes County, North Carolina, under aptain John Cleaveland, and thence marched into the Cherokee Nation  to suppress lawless invasions. After living in North Carolina a short time after the war began, he removed to Columbia County, Georgia, where he was elected 1st Lieutenant in Captain Beverley’s Company of Cavalry. His widow, Mary, applied for pension.
