Voss of Culpepper County, Virginia & Cobb County, Georgia

The origin of the Voss family in Virginia was Spotsylvania County where several members of the family intermarried with the famous Spotswoods. Edward Voss purchased 250 acres known as Synfield from Gabriel Jones for 400 pds., being the former home of William Slaugher. Culpepper Deeds 1772-4,19 April 1773. On 3 April 1773, Thomas Sale of Essex Co. with his wife, Molley, deeded to Edward Voss of Spotsylvania Co. 300 acres for 200 pds. Nicholas Voss married Mary Spotswood on 9 May 1794 in Culpepper County, Virginia, at the home of Colonel Spotswood by John Woodville, the rector of St. Mark's Parish (Episcopal). Another marriage occurred, Catharine Voss to Lawson Barnett on 9 September 1794 at the home of Edward Voss, by John Woodville, rector of St. Mark's Parish. The 1810 Culpapper County, Virginia Census lists Nicholas Voss as having 3 sons under the age of 10 and one daughter 10-15 years old. The only other possibility is Robert Voss, who had three sons under 10 years of age. However, Robert Voss did not go to Georgia. Nicholas Voss apparently died before 1830 because his widow, Mary Voss, was found on the 1830 Putnam County, Georgia Census. She was 50-60 years old and had the following known children: 2 males 20-30, 2 females 10-15, female 15-20, female 20-30, and a male 100 years old and over. Known issue:
