Turner Family

James Turner was born ca 1759 in Virginia. He was married in 1785 to Elizabeth Baker (born 1765) and they removed to the 96th District of South Carolina; later to Hancock County; then Greene County; and finally Morgan County where he died. A Morgan County Deed in Deed Book A, page 363, dated 19 May 1806 of Richard and Susanna Powell to James Turner, all of Lincoln County, 440 acres in Wayne County on the St. Mary's River. I searched Lincoln County for any information on James Turner, and the only thing found was his son, James B. Turner, listed on the 1820 Census. The 1830 Census of Lincoln County gave Allen Turner and James B. Turner. So they may have taken up some old lands of their father. James Sr. was discovered on the 1820 Morgan County Census when he had family as follows: 1 male under 10, 2 males 16-26, 3 females 10-16, female 16-18, female 26-45. He died in 1826, when the Morgan County Inferior Court, 4 September 1826, "The Last Will and Testament of James Turner, deceased, was proven by Wade H. Turner and Green B. Turner, executors." The Last Will and Testament of James Turner was recorded in Morgan County Will Book B, and named his wife, Elizabeth. Son: Samuel. Daughters: Elizabeth, Bethena, Serena. Sons, Allen and Larkin, James B. Exrs: Sons, Wade H. Turner and Greene B. Turner. 2/28/1826: 9/15/1826. Issue: Another possible son was Bartholomew Turner, born 1797, died 1852 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, married Sarah Elizabeth Morgan, a daughter of Jesse Morgan and Elizabeth Arnold of Morgan County. The movements of Bartholomew Turner in Georgia are consistent with the following persons: Larkin, Esom, Green B. and Samuel Baker Turner, sons of James Turner who died in Morgan County. The Morgan County Inferior Court Minutes, 4 September 1826. "The Last Will and Testament of James Turner, deceased, was proven by Wade H. Turner and Green B. Turner, executors.

The 1820 Morgan County Census lists Easom Turner and James Turner. James was born 1775 or before and listed 2 sons between the ages of 16 and 26. This could have been Allen, Larkin, Greene B. or Wade Hampton Turner, as none of these appeared separately on the 1820 Georgia Census. Also, Bartholomew (of same age range) was not listed on 1820 Georgia Census. Bartholomew drew in the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery, a resident of Morgan County in Fitzpatrick's District, drawling Land Lot 266 in Houston County. Apparently Bartholomew was in Newton County by 1832 because the Inferior Court Minutes 1822-1839, page 135, September Term 1832 - "Ordered that John K. Browning, Jesse M. White, John Smith, Richard Harper and Bartholomew Turner be appointed appriasers of the estate of William J. King, deceased.

I researched the records in Morgan and Newton Counties and have detailed the James Turner family under Genealogies and hope that this will help clarify. I believe that Bartholomew was a son of James, but did not locate any proofs.
