MARK THORNTON SR.


Mark Thornton, Sr., the son of Mark Thornton, was born 1705/1719 in Virginia, d. 1809 Elbert Co., Ga. He appears to have been married twice. The 2nd marriage was to Susannah Dozier ca 1754 in Lunenburg Co., according to the DAR application of Mrs. Amzie Williford Newton. Lunenburg Co., Virginia 1745-1816 by Bell cites: "processioning lines in Cumberland Parish between Ludwick Farmer and Mark Thornton..." Issue of Mark Thornton, Sr. by first marriage:
  1. Thomas Thornton b. 4/11/1742 Lunenburg Co., Va., d. 5/20/1820, Ga. (Bible of Mrs. Cora Craft). He left Virginia with his three brothers (Dozier, Mark, Jr. and William), going through North Carolina. They were all Revolutionary War Soldiers. In 1784 the brothers were listed in Wilkes Co., Ga. The children of Thomas were found in the Bible of Thomas Thornton. Issue:
      
  1. Sarah Thornton b. 9/2/1768.   
  2. Prior Thornton b. 4/27/1770. He removed from the Carolina's to Georgia with his father, Thomas. (Bible record in possession of Mrs. Cora Craft, to be given to Frank Warren, Tignall, Ga.). He d. In Jackson Co., Ga., the inventory of his estate dated 8/24/1821. Jackson Co. Returns 1800-39, page 535-537. Among the purchasers of the sale of his personal effects were: Elizabeth Thornton, William Thornton and Mark Thornton. In the Return dated 2/5/1828 by Elizabeth Thornton, admx, money was paid to: Thomas C. Barron, guardian; Mark Thornton; Willis Thornton. The Estate of Prior Thornton paid Elizabeth Thornton for boarding, clothing and schooling three minor children for the year of 1822. Issue:
       
  1. Mark Thornton d. 1849 Jackson Co., Ga., his LWT dated 1/22/1849, probated 5/1849 Jackson Co. He named his wife, Mary and son, Stephen. Wife, Mary, was b. 1808 in Ga. Jackson Co., Ga. Deed Book I & J, p. 356, Joseph McLester deeded to Mark Thornton 5/6/1833. both of Jackson Co., land North of the Oconee River. Mark Thornton was Lieutenant in the Jackson Co. Militia from 1821-1824 and Captain from 1834-1836. Jackson Co. Inventories, 1840-1854, page 430-431, dated 6/20/1849, Vol. A., 1850-60 Jackson Co. Inventories, page 627, A Return of S. A. Thornton, Exr of Estate of Mark Thornton, decd, filed 2/1/1857. Receipts from heirs dated 1/31/1859 as follows: Isaac R. Thornton, Posey Wilson (in right of his wife). The Estate of Mrs. Mary Thornton in 1858 (sale of negroes) Jackson Co., Ga., with T. A. Thornton, Admr, Distribution of her Estate, Vol. A., Jackson Co. Inventories, etc. 1850-60, page 630, paid: John D. Thornton, Posey Wilson, Isaac R. Thornton. Issue:     a. Isaac R. Thornton b. 1827. Listed on the 1860 Jackson Co., Ga. Census, Jefferson township, page 27. Wife, Sarah, b. 1830 Ga. Issue: Leevey E. (F) b. 1855 Jackson Co.; Nancy A. B. 1858 Jackson Co.; and Easter E. B. 1859 Jackson Co., Ga.

        e. Zemily C. Thornton b. 1841 Jackson Co., Ga. m. 1st, 2/21/1856 in Jackson Co., Posey Wilson, and m. 2nd, Elihu Minish ca 1866 who was on the 1870 Jackson Co., Ga. Census.

  3. Elizabeth Thornton b. 12/4/1773 m. Mr. Warren, d. 1872.   
  4. John Thornton b. 12/14/1775. His estate dated 11/10/1818 in Jackson Co., Ga. Inventories book, 1800-1819, page 463-4464. Named in the sale were: Penelope Thornton, Prior Thornton, Sarah Thornton, Polly Thornton, etc. Penelope Thornton supported three minor children in 1820, viz...Benajah, Levina and Synthia. The Bible of Thomas Thornton (4/11/1742-5/20/1820) also lists the children of John Thornton as follows:     1. Middleton Thornton b. 11/30/1799.     2. Sarah Thornton b. 1/4/1802.     3. Polley Thornton b. 4/9/1804.     4. Elsabad Thornton b. 9/28/1806.     5. Betsy W. Thornton b. 12/29/1807.     6. Micajah Thornton b. 7/3/1809.     7. Memorable Thornton b. 1/7/1810. Memory Thornton may have lived in Talbot Co., Ga. for awhile because he deeded some land, along with Eppy W. Thornton, John M. Thornton, and Mark Thornton to Thomas Eavinson, dated 1/20/1837, it being Lot 187, Dist. 17. He apparently removed to Chambers Co., Ala., for he was listed on the 1840 census as being between the age of 30- 40.
