Thompson Genealogy

Submitted to Georgia Research Helper by: Virginia Tilleux Hagen, 5411 Paisley Lane, Houston, TX 77096.

Virginia wants to know:

Question: to determine if Richard Thompson and Rebecca Thompson of Jackson Co. are the same persons enumerated in the 1850/1860 Gordon Co., Ga. Census.

Answer: Richard S. Thompson is not the same Richard Thompson enumerated on the 1830 and 1840 Jackson Co. Census. He is, however, listed on the 1840 Walker Co. Census, one male under 5, one male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, one male 40-50, one female 15-20 and one female 30-40. In addition to Richard being in Walker Co. By 1840, also listed were: J. Thompson, Henry Thompson, John Thompson (2), and James Thompson.

Question: To find the parents of Richard S. Thompson.

Answer: He may be a son of Richard Thompson (Sr)., b. ca 1770 who lived in Jackson Co., Ga., died after 1840. This Richard and Sherrod Thompson are the oldest men there for that time period. Sherrod appears to have come from South Carolina. There may be some estate records in Jackson Co. to prove this. (No Lwt for Richard). Also, some subsequent deeds to those which you sent me, as sometimes subsequent deeds mentions estates when land is being divided.

Unfortunately, Walker Co. Records burned prior to 1880, so we don't know anything about who followed Richard there, except J., Henry, John and James may be related. The 1850 Walker Co. Census shows -

Tilman Thompson 37, Ga (suggests a relationship to Rev. War soldier, William Thompson who m. Nancy Tillman in Jackson Co.)

Elizabeth A. 31 N. C.
Charity R. 5 Ga.
Martha 3 Ga.
Julius F. 5/12
Nancy Thompson 40 S. C. (This is the widow of Rev. War soldier, William Thompson).
Susan 13 Ga.
Mary J. 10 Ga.
Sarah 2 Ga.

Thus, Richard S. Thompson could be a son of William Thompson, Rev. War Soldier, by his first wife. The only clue on this is that they were in Walker Co., Ga. together in 1840. However, since this information came from NSDAR application, I am inclined to discredit William Thompson being a Rev. War Soldier. I just haven't evidence to his service anywhere. And there are so many mistakes on the DAR and NSDAR applications. Too, when I researched 1830 Jackson Co.

William Thompson was age 20-30, having 2 sons under the age of 5. Another thing is that William Thompson, Rev. War Soldier who d. 1808 in Ga., cannot be the husband of Nancy Tillman, because her youngest child (Sarah) was born in 1848. Her father, William, would have died after 1848. This William Thompson does not appear to me to be a Rev. War Soldier...he might be a brother to Richard S. and they migrated to Walker Co. in 1840, where William died, and then Richard S. moved on to Gordon Co.

Overview:

Alexander Thompson, Revolutionary War Soldier of Pennsylvania, m. 3/1760 Elizabeth Mary Hodge in Pennsylvania, and joined the American Revolution from Burke Co., N. C. He received a Georgia Land Grant. Died 1808, Wilkes Co., Ga. His children as follows:

  1. William Thompson, Revolutionary War Soldier, b. ca 1770 m. (2) 11/12/1810 Nancy Tillman in Jackson Co., the daughter of William and Mary (Farrow) Tillman. See above comments.

  2. Alexander Thompson, Jr. 1771-1845 m. Eunice Strickland, daughter of Solomon Strickland, Revolutionary War Soldier, b. 1735, d. Madison Co., GA 1818 and his wife, Amy Pace.

  3. Ruth Thompson.

  4. James Thompson.

  5. Robert Thompson.

  6. John Thompson.

  7. Sarah Thompson.

  8. Esther Thompson.
Sherrod Thompson, Revolutionary War Soldier, b. 1757, listed in Jackson Co., GA 1840, age 83.xv The DAR marked his grave, died 1841, however I searched the Jackson Co. Cemeteries, and did not see him listed. Sherod Thompson was listed on the 1830 Jackson Co. Census, age 70- 80, wife age 70-80, son age 20-30. In 1832 he drew in the Gold Lottery, a resident of Jackson Co. His LWT probated 1843 injackson Co., Will Book A, page 265A, named his wife, Mourning and children as follows:

  1. Jesse W. Thompson
  2. William S. Thompson, b. 1805 Ga., merchant, listed 1850 Jackson Co. Census m. Eliza b. 1806 Ga. Issue: Augustus C. b. 1828, Francis A. b. 1830, Lewis P. b. 1832, Elisha M. b.. 1835, Elizabeth C. b. 1839, Lucinda A. B. 1843, James K. P. b. 1845.
  3. Green L. Thompson. Listed on 1830-1850 Jackson Co. Census, b. 1803 S. C. m. Lucinda b. 1806 Ga. Issue: Lewis b. 1830 Ga., Mourning b. 1833 Ga., Angeline b. 1838 Ga., Milton b. 1840 Ga., William b. 1843 Ga., Sarah b. 1846 Ga.
  4. Lewis D. Thompson.
  5. Caroline Thompson m. James Bailey. Richard Thompson, b. 1770/1780 listed 1830-1840 Jackson Co., Ga. Census, wife b. 1770/1780.
I studied the comparison between these two census records and the children (age ranges) match. I that that perhaps Richard Thompson b. 1800 Ga. might actually be the head of the household here, having aged parents, however, his children did not match the age ranges. So apparently, this is Richard Thompson, Sr. He had four sons and and five daughters. It is "conceivable" that his children are: Absalom b. 1790 S. C., William C. b. 1797 S. C., and Richard b. 1800 Ga. The first two probable children are the only remaining Thompsons in Jackson Co. in 1850, with Richard being in Gordon Co. Since Richard is not listed as head of household in 1830, he may be the son of Richard, age 20-30 on the 1830 Jackson Co. Census. Please note, however, that the 1830 Census does not provide proper age ranges under any Thompson family for Absalom and William C. Thompson.
