The immigrant, Charles Carl Steiss, was b. ca 1745 in Alsace, Lorraine, Germany and d. 8/21/1801 in Warren Co., Kentucky. He migrated from Germany in 1754, arriving in Philadelphia September 14, 2754 onboard the ship Nancy. He soon settled in the Broad River area of North Carolina, probably having crossing the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road into North Carolina.

Charles Styce is on record as having received a Land Grant in 1763 for 150 acres on Bullocks Creek in Craven County, South Carolina. Craven Co. is also referred to as having been located in North Carolina. It must have had something to do with the borders.

Charles Stice was ordered to serve as an overseer of a section of the road being laid out from Richardson's Shoals on Second Broad River to the Charles Town Trading Road as per the 1769 Minutes of Tryon County, North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. Soon thereafter, in October of 1778 he was granted leave to build a Grist Mill on the shoals of the Little Broad River, being located on his own land This was called Stice Shoals Dam. His petition to construct the Grist Mill on Little Broad River is filed in Misc. Civil Papers 1771-1776, Tryon Co., N. C., as follows:

"To the worshipful Court of Tryon County in the State of North Carolina

The petition of Charles Stice humbly sheweth that Whereas your petitioner hath a very conenient place on his own Land or Joyning his own Land at the Sholes of first Little Broad River to Build a mill and as our ------------is at much loss for a good mill, your petitioner prayes your Worshipfuls to Grant him an order to Build a publick Mill thereon and and as in Duly Bound your Petitioner Shall Ever Pray......"/s/CharlesStice.

His son, Andrew Stice, was also listed on the east side of Beaver Dam Creek, and PhillipStice was listed on the water's of Bill's reek and the southside of Youngs Mountain, with one son under 16, his wife and two daughters.

On March 23, 1799 he sold 240 acres to George Blanton and removed with his son, Andrew to Monmouth Cave, Kentucky, purchasing land on Green River, near the town of Brownsville, in Warren Co., where he died in 1803.
