Stephens of Crawfordville



Andrew Baskins Stephens was married to Margaret Grier. Andrew died in 1826 in Taliaferro County. Issue:

Alexander Hamilton Stephens was born 11 Feb 1812 in Wilkes County and was orphaned at the age of fourteen years. He graduated from Franklin College when twenty years of age and began practising law two years later in Crawfordville. He arose quickly in the political ranks, becoming a US Congressman from the mid 1840's to the onset of the War Between the States. After the war he returned home to Liberty Hall but was there seized by Union troops (1865) and was imprisoned for 18 months at Fort Warren in the Boston harbor. In 1872, he returned to Congress, and in 1882 was elected Governor of Georgia. He died 4 Mar 1883 and was buried in Atlanta, later being re-interred in Crawfordville.

Alexander Stephens
Alexander H. Stephens purchased
Liberty Hall in 1845 from the estate of
Williamson Bird. Stephens owned another
plantation two miles from Crawfordville
which was worked by 32 slaves.
