Stapleton of Loudoun County, Virginia
and Jefferson County, Georgia

The Stapleton family seat in Georgia was a town named after the founder, Stapleton, in Jefferson County. George Lawson Stapleton, reportedly a son of George Stapleton, was christened in Loudoun County, Virginia on 21 December 1760 and died 30 May 1832 in Stapleton, Jefferson County, Georgia, buried in the homeplace cemetery. During the Revolutionary War he served as a private. He was married to Margaret Downer in 1783 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Margaret Downer, a daughter of John Downer, was born 1768 in Ireland and died 3 March 1852 in Jefferson County, buried in the Stapleton Family Cemetery (no marker). Stapleton, George, Sr. and George Jr. and Thomas Stapleton witnessed the LWT of James Beatey dated 17 June 1815 in Jefferson Co. George Stapleton, Sr. of Jefferson Co. also witnessed the LWT of Thomas Hadden dated 18 October 1858 in Jefferson County, along with Thomas R. Hammett of Warren County. Issue:

• John Stapleton, born 32 January 1785 in Stapleton, died 6 February 1785, buried Stapleton family cemetery.
• Elizabeth Stapleton, born 15 March 1786 in Stapleton, died 24 December 1786, buried family cemetery.
• Infant Stapleton, born and died 13 January 1788 Stapleton, buried in family cemetery.
• Mary Stapleton, born 20 September 1789 in Stapleton, died 3 March 1808, buried in family cemetery.
• Thomas Stapleton, born 8 January 1792 in Stapleton, died 25 July 1836, buried in family cemetery. He married Sarah Hammett on 5 January 1814 in Jefferson Co.
• George Stapleton, born 1 November 1794 in Stapleton, died 12 April 1874, buried in family cemetery. Issue:

  1. James Stapleton, born 1824 in Jefferson Co.

• William Stapleton, born 10 March 1797 in Stapleton, died 3 August 1865, buried in family Cemetery, unmarked grave. He married on 21 February 1822 in Jefferson Co., Kessiah M. Hammett, born 11 February 1793, died 23 July 1883, buried: Stapleton Family Cemetery, Jefferson Co. Issue:

• James Stapleton, born 13 March 1797 in Stapleton, died 12 August 1865, buried in family cemetery. He married Christian Mechant on 8 April 1821 in Jefferson Co. Christian M. Stapleton, born 15 October 1796, died 6 December 1871, (married 8 April 1821 by Daniel Connel, J. P., a daughter of Isaac Marchant. Issue:

  1. Martin Stapleton, born 1 December 1821, died 11 Mary 1896, buried Stapleton Family Cemetery. He married Elizabeth Peeples on 6 December 1843 in Jefferson County. Elizabeth was born 7 September 1820, died 10 May 1911, a daughter of Henry and Delilah Peebles.
  2. John D. Stapleton, born 1823 in Jefferson Co.
  3. Mary Stapleton, born 11 March 1825 in Jefferson Co., died 8 October 1902, buried in Stapleton Family Cemetery, married Mr. Minton.
  4. Margarette Stapleton, born 1827 in Jefferson Co.
  5. Matilda Stapleton, born 1829 in Jefferson Co.
  6. Elizabeth Stapleton, born 1832 in Jefferson Co.
