Stapleton of Loudoun County, Virginia
and Jefferson County, Georgia



The Stapleton family seat in Georgia was a town named after the founder, Stapleton, in Jefferson County. George Lawson Stapleton, reportedly a son of George Stapleton, was christened in Loudoun County, Virginia on 21 December 1760 and died 30 May 1832 in Stapleton, Jefferson County, Georgia, buried in the homeplace cemetery. During the Revolutionary War he served as a private. He was married to Margaret Downer in 1783 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Margaret Downer, a daughter of John Downer, was born 1768 in Ireland and died 3 March 1852 in Jefferson County, buried in the Stapleton Family Cemetery (no marker). Stapleton, George, Sr. and George Jr. and Thomas Stapleton witnessed the LWT of James Beatey dated 17 June 1815 in Jefferson Co. George Stapleton, Sr. of Jefferson Co. also witnessed the LWT of Thomas Hadden dated 18 October 1858 in Jefferson County, along with Thomas R. Hammett of Warren County. Issue:
