Spearman of Jasper County


John Spearman, the son of Job Spearman and his wife, Elizabeth E. (Rutherford) Spearman, was born 1764 in Caroline County, Virginia, died 1827 in Jasper County. He served in the American Revolution in the Georgia Troops for which he received a land grant. He was married in 1787 in Mary Witherspoon. [1]. An 1800 deed in Greene County finds him in Wilkes County, viz: 25 July 1800, Lewis Barrett and Mary, his wife, John Spearman and Anne Dawson Spearman, his wife, Elizabeth Toombs and Sally Dawson Toombs of Wilkes County to Robert Toombs of Wilkes County for $200.00, 130 acres devised to Dawson G. Toombs in the last will and testament of his father dated 8 December 1795 in Greene County on the waters of Fishing Creek adj. Watson and Grigsby. Greene County Deed Book 2, pp. 582-583. His only known issue is as follows:
  • Gabriel T. Spearman was born 1798 in Georgia, farmer, died before 1880. He married Martha Ledbetter (born 1809 in Georgia) on 15 March 1827 in Jasper County. Martha was listed with some of her children on the 1880 Jasper County Census, Wyatt District. Issue:
  1. John Spearman, born 1828 in Georgia, farmer.
  2. Thomas Spearman, born 1832 in Georgia.
  3. Sarah Spearman, born 1835 in Georgia.
  4. William Spearman, born 1836 in Georgia.
  5. Gabriel Spearman, born 1838 in Georgia.
  6. Martha Spearman, born 1840 in Georgia.
  7. Mathew W. Spearman, born 1842 in Jasper County, farmer. Wife, Julia L. (born 1849 in Georgia). Issue:
    1. John Spearman, born 1871 in Jasper County.
    2. Gabriel T. Spearman, born 1873 in Jasper County.
    3. Eva Spearman, born 1875 in Jasper County (Mulatto)
    4. Edwin Spearman, born 1876 in Jasper County.
    5. Henry L. Spearman, born 1878 in Jasper County.
  • George Spearman, born 1846 in Jasper County.
  • Mary Spearman, born 1849 in Jasper County.
