WILLIAM SMITH of Liberty County


William Smith, Revolutionary War Soldier, served on the Georgia Line, granted 287 1/2 acres in Washington County 4/10/1785, per Knight's Roster of the Revolution, Page 291. He was born in 1765, died July 16, 1841, buried at Bethany Church, Clinch County. He was a son of Madison Smith who was born 1720 in Hampshire, England and emigrated with his father, Madison Smith, Sr. to Georgia in 1733. He grew up in Liberty County until about 1819 when he moved to Appling County and settled on the Little Satilla River, later locating on Red Bluff Creek. William married Mary Townsend Platt, born 1/2/1766, died Liberty County about 1808. He had seven children by her, then married Bineta Stephens, born 1776 in N. C., by whom he had eight children:

AUSTIN SMITH of Liberty and Ware Counties


Austin Smith was born in 1805 in North Carolina, a son of John G. Smith (d. 4-11-1833). Settled in Thomson, Appling County between 1820 and 1825. He married in 1827 Mary Hall, a sister of Hardy Hall of Coffee County. He died about 1880, buried in Waresboro Cemetery, Ware County, Georgia. Children:

CHARLES SMITH of Liberty and Wayne Counties


Charles Smith was born 1763, Revolutionary War Soldier, Edgefield District, S. C. Died in Wayne County, Georgia in 1833, his grave marked by the D. A. R. His first wife was Vicy Ann Ellis, born 1765, died 1824, who he married about 1783 in Edgefield County, S. C. He married second about 1825 Rebecca Lane in Appling County, a daughter of William Lane. Six children were born by the first wife, and two by the second wife:

Liberty County Deed Book D, Page 29, Thomas Smith, one of the heirs of James Smith of South Carolina, deceased, to William Smith and James Smith, executors of the deceased. Bond dated 11/26/1796 to indemnify executors for his part of any debts of the estate.

Liberty County Deed Book H, Page 115, James Smith of Liberty County to his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Dunwoody, gift of 21 slaves. 3/28/1812.

Oct. 3, 1803, James Smith appointed guardian of Hannah McIver, being over 14; also Euphremia Seymour McIver and Alexander Munro McIver, minors.
