PEYTON SMITH of Greene County



Peyton Smith was married to Judith Wadlow on March 17, 1763 Goochland County, Northam Parish, Virginia. They moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia about 1782, and between 1788 and 1791 moved to Greene County, Georgia. Greene County Deed Book 1, p. 696-7, Henry Karr of Greene Co. To Jeffrey Earley of Wilkes Co. For 100 lbs., land bound south by Peyton Smith. Date: 4/28/1791.

Greene County Deed Book I, Page 506-7, 5/20/1791, Joseph Phillips and wife, Jean to Peyton Smith of Greene County for 6 slaves and 5000 pounds of tobacco, 575 acres of land bounding the Academy land on Richland Creek.

Greene County Deed Book 2, Page 140-141, 1.1/15/1794, Reubin D. Jernett of Greene County to Peyton Smith of Greene County, for 37 pounds, 10 shillings, 1/2 of Lot 23 in Greensborough, on the west side of Main Street, lot 64 x 180, whereon said Smith now lives.

The 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, Greene County lists, "Robert Smith, a son of Peyton Smith."

Children of Peyton Smith:
  • Sally Smith, born 12/17/1763 CNortham Parish Register, Goochland County, Virginial, married in Pittsylvania County, Virginia 5/6/1785 Daniel Jett, Revolutionary War Soldier. She died before 1806, the date of the Will of her brother, Peyton.
  • Charles Smith, born ca 1770 Goochland County, Virginia, died in Morgan County, Georgia ca 1830. His wife, Jane, born ca 1774 in Virginia, died 8/20/1822 in Greene County, Georgia, and is buried on Richland Creek. Charles Smith came to Columbia County, Georgia in 1768. He gave his Power of Attorney to George Smith to settle all amounts due Charles Smith in Virginia, dated Wilkes County, Ga. October 3, 1785.

    Wilkes Co. Deed, Book EE, Page 92, Charles Smith, Sr. and wife, Nancy, to William Langham, 196 acres of land originally granted to him 1/27/1789.

    Greene Co. Deed Book I, page 53-4, dated 1-4-1787, Michael Cup and Barbara of Greene Co. To Charles Smith of Wilkes Co. for #40, 70 acres on the Oconee River at Scull Shoals.

    Greene Co. Deed Book I, page 162-3, dated 6-24-1794, John Freeman of Wilkes Co. to Charles Smith of Greene Co. for #50, 150 acres in Greene Co. On the Oconee River. Children:

    1. Jesse Smith, made his Will dated 8/26/1822 Wilkes County, Ga. naming his mother, Phoebe, and sisters, Jane, Susannah, Violet, and father, Charles Smith.
    2. Jane Smith, married 7/16/1802 Columbia Co. Humphrey Evans.
    3. Susannah Smith.
    4. Violet Smith.
    5. William Smith. "William Smith and heir of Charles Smith, deceased, of Warren County and Telitha, his wife, to John L. Dixon of Washington County, for 300 pounds, 200 acres originally granted to said Charles Smith by Sir James Wright 8/2/1768."
  • Judith Smith born ca 1766 Goochland County, Virginia, married James Pinckard 6/5/1786 Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They lived in Jasper County, Georgia in 1821.
  • Patsy Smith married James Thomas Sr. She died before 1815. Her husband was living in the Parish of St. Marys, Louisiana in 1820.
  • Susannah Smith, born 1773 Goochland County, Virginia, died June 26, 1862, married Colonel Ezekiel E. Park 1790 in Virginia. Her Will dated 6/4/1860 Baldwin County, Georgia.
  • Robert Smith (idiot)
  • Peyton T. Smith. His Will dated 11/17/1806 Baldwin County, Ga., probated 10/6/1807 Baldwin Co., Ga. Peyton T. Smith d. 6-8-1852 in Lee Co., formerly of Putnam Co., per Central Georgian dated 6-29-1852. Peyton T. Smith named in his Will his nieces, Judith and Elizabeth Pinkard. His neph ew, Daniel Jett, the son of Daniel and Sally Jett, and the balance of his estate went to Peyton Pinkard. Executor, James Pinkard.

Greene County Deed Book 2, 9~18/1793, Joseph Smith of Washington County, carpenter, and Mary, his wife, to Joseph Barksdale of Greene County for 150 pounds, 300 acres in Greene County on Beaverdame Creek, Ogeechee River.

Greene County Inventories, etc., Page 9-11, Book A, 1787-1801, Miscellaneous Records, Estate of Joseph Smith, Page 7-8, Will of Joseph Smith dated Oct. 8, 1786, probated Oct. 22, 1787, names wife, Agnes and son, Daniel. Daniel Smith was found in Jackson County in 1805 Land Lottery.

Southern Recorder published 1/1/1835, Alexander Smith married Elizabeth Bly, both of Greene County.

Greene County Estates, Book A, Page 240-241, 9/22/1797, Jane Davis, James Smith, David Davis and Robert Grier, apply for letters of administration on Estate of James Davis, deceased.
