WILLIAM AUGUSTUS SMITH



Volume II, Memoirs of Georgia, Page 363:
"William Augustus Smith, a large manufacturer of naval stores at Nellwood, is a native of North Carolina, and was born Dec. 16, 1854, in Cumberland County. He was the son of John Henry and Eugenia Smith, the father being one of the biggest producers of turpentine in the "tar heel" state. William was the eldest of four children. He attended the schools of Cumberland County until he was seventeen years old, when he commenced farming for himself. In 1879 he moved to Camden County, Georgia to engage in the manufacture of naval stores. After a prosperous business of four years, he moved to Worth County, where he operated for two years and then went to Effingham County. From there he went to Liberty County, and to Bulloch County in 1892. His business has developed rapidly since his advent in this county, and he now manufactures 1200 barrels of spirits and 3500 barrels of resin per annum. He was married to Miss Mittle Wornell, the daughter of J. S. Wornelt, a prominent planter in Liberty County April 9, 1894. They have one child, W. A."

The Will of James Smith of St. Mary's, "tanner and currier, " dated 6/17/1820 in Philadelphia, Pa., probated 7/24/1820. Named friend, Samuel McCearn of Southwark, Philadelphia, 40 guineas. Leaves 40 guineas to his brother, Joseph Smith at Belfast, Ireland, for the benefit of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith. Names wife, Mary and five daughters, all minors:
