Shorter of Floyd County


Alfred Shorter, the son of Jacob Shorter and his wife, Delphy (Henderson) Shorter, was born 1803 in Wilkes County, Georgia and died Jul 1882 in Rome, Floyd County. He was listed among the first settlers to Rome, having coming to Georgia with only a satchel and a pet parrot when sixteen years of age. He was employed at Baldwin's Store in Monticello, Georgia before removing to Rome in 1837 where he was known as a merchant. Widowed in 1880.
Shorter Home
Thornwood was built by Alfred Shorter ca 1818 near the Coosa River in Rome, Georgia. During the War Between the States, Thornwood was occupied twice by Union troops. It is said that the yankees destroyed the marble mantles. Three generations of Shorters resided in the home until it was sold in 1944.
