Sheftall of Savannah


Benjamin Sheftall Benjamin, merchant, Jew, arrived in the colony 10 July 1733 with General James Oglethorpe, and was granted Lot No. 64 in Savannah. Wife: Elizabeth, but when he made his LWT dated 4 August 1765, probated 4 May 1772 in Chatham County, he named Hannah. Grandchildren: Sheftall Sheftall and Perla Sheftall to get the proceeds from the sale of 200 acres which was purchased from John Snooke. Issue:

  • Levi Sheftall born 11 January 1739 Georgia, died Savannah, married Sarah DeLemotta in the West Indies.
  • Mordecai Sheftall.
  • Sheftall Sheftall was born 3 August 1734 in Savannah, Georgia.
Issue:

A. Solomon Sheftall married Clara Delemotter and lived in Savannah. He served in the Mexican War, and served in Savannah as a physician. He was blind the last eight years of his life, succumbing in 1866. Issue:
1. Abraham Sheftall was born 12 January 1823 in Savannah Georgia. He was educated in Savannah, and completed his education in Baltimore, Maryland, studying to be a rabbi. He ultimately became one of the largest landowners in Chtham County., also owning rice plantations in Bryan and Effingham Counties. His enterprises also took him into the sawmill business. During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Confederate and served throughout the war as a spy, running the blockade from Charleston to Savannah. He was captured three times, but always escaped. He married Miss Sarah E. Fox (1835-October 1913), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Fox on 19 April 1851. He died in Savannah in September of 1891. They had fourteen children. Issue:

a. Julia Sheftall, born 20 March 1854, died 24 October 1858.

b. Abraham Sheftall, born 20 August 1856, died 22 October 1900.

c. Charles H. Sheftall, born 20 September 1858.

d. Daniel F. Sheftall, born 12 October 1860, served as Justice of the Peace in Savannah. He married on 17 February 1878, Jennie D. Hodges and had eight children.

e. Solomon Sheftall, born 10 January 1862, died 9 December 1919. He was the founder of Solomon Sheftall & Brother, wholesale grocers and produce merchants. He married (1) on 18 April 1886 Miss Alice Parry (died 1894) and had four children. He married (2) Harriett Emily Parry, sister of his first wife, and they had five children.

f. Samuel Sheftall, born 30 June 1863 married Mittie Clifton, having five children.

g. Ella A. Sheftall, born 28 January 1865, married Dr. B. F. Sheftall (died 1893).

h. Clarence Sheftall, born 1 September 1867, married Annie E. Mock on 31 January 1886 and had seven children.

i. Sarah E. Sheftall, born 10 March 1869, married Henry G. Everitt on 26 March 1888.

j. Ben F. Sheftall, born 11 March 1871, married, had two children.

k. Rosa Lee Sheftall, born 16 December 1873, married C. C. Hill on 6 N ovember 1891 (died 15 May 1898), and had two children.

l. J. B. Reed Sheftall, born 5 July 1875, died 8 November 1878.

m. Virginia L. Sheftall, born 25 October 1877, married O. T. Bourne on 17 January 1899; had one child.

n. Edward Tattnall Sheftall, born 18 October 1880. He directed the firm of E. T. Sheftall & Company (wholesale and produce merchants in Savannah) after the death of his brother, Solomon. He married Anna Augusta Harter on 12 September 1912, and they had one child, Sarah Elizabeth.
