Shattles of Monroe and Upson Counties

George Shattles was born in 1772 (I could not read "where on the 1850 Monroe County Census) and his wife, Barbara, born 1780 in South Carolina?. From all indications it would appear that they moved to Georgia after 1824, settling in Monroe County where George Shattle was a fortunate drawer in the Georgia Gold Lottery (drawing land in 1835 located in the 470th district, Lot 539, Upson County. He may not have resided on thar parcel because John Shattles was the earliest settler to Upson County. Since I do not know all of the names of the children of George Shattles, it appears quite obvious that John was one of them. So we will proceed with John Shattles.

John Shattles was born ca 1790, was listed on the 1830-1840 Upson County Census. John Shattles sold some land to Isaac Jackson of Greene County, located in the 11th district of Upson County on 6 August 1833. The 1840 census indicates that he had a son 10-15 years of age (James), a son 5-10 years of age (David), a son 30-40 years of age (George), himself, age 40-50, and a wife, age 40-50. The only members of the Shattles family which resided in Upson County, fit easily into the age slots. In 1845, David Shattles was found in the Upson County Poor House. The older children had married. Known Issue of John Shattles:
  • Louisa (Louisiana) Shattles, born 1809 married Hopson Duberry on 19 October 1843 in Upson County. She was his 2nd wife.
  • George Shattles, born 1811 in South Carolina, overseer, listed on 1850 Monroe County Census. Wife, Lucinda, was born 1822. When George died in 1857, the Upson County Court appointed her as guardian of the children. In 1860 the Upson County Poor School Lists the following orphans of George Shattles, viz: Azeline, Georgia Ann, John R., James W., Lucinda A., Georgia A. and William W.. Later that year James and John were listed as orphans of Lucinda Shattles. Lucinda was found a resident of Union Hill in Upson County in 1870 and 1880. Issue:
    1. Francis R. Shattles, born 1841 Monroe County.
    2. Martha Shattles, born 1843 Monroe County.
    3. Lucinda Shattles, born 1845 Monroe County.
    4. Eliza Shattles, born 1847 Monroe County.
    5. Georgia Ann Shattles, born 1848 Monroe County. .
    6. James W. Shattles, born 1851 in Upson County. He was listed on the 1874 Pauper's List of Upson County.
    7. John R. Shattles, born 1853 in Upson County, died 1 January 1933 in Upson County.
    8. Willie Shattles, born 1855 in Upson County, listed with his brother, Joseph, on 1880 Census a resident of Union Hill.
    9. Joseph Shattles, born 1856 in Upson County, listed on 1880 Census a resident of Union Hill.
    10. Annie (Azeline) Shattles, born 1857 in Upson County.
  • Mary Shattles, born ca 1812, married John McGraw on 9 November 1831 in Upson County.
  • Catherine Shattles, born ca 1813 married William Riley on 5 July 1832 in Upson County.
  • James Shattles, born 1820 in South Carolina, married Ann Davidson (born 1828) on 16 July 1846 in Monroe County. Listed on 1850 Monroe County Census and 1850-1860 Upson County Census. James Shattles was widowed on the 1880 Upson County Census, Flint District. Issue:
    a. Martha Shattles, born 1847 Monroe County.
    b. George Shattles, born 1849 Monroe County.
    c. Sarah Shattles, born 1853 Monroe County.
    d. James Shattles, born 1855.
    e. Bob Shattles, born 1857.
    f. Mary Shattles, born 1858.
    g. Mollie Shattles, born 1860 Upson County.
    h. Gabriella Shattles (daughter), born 1864 Upson County.
    i. Bettie Shattles, born 1865 Upson County.
    j. Josie Shattles, born 1868 Upson County.
  • David Shattles, born 1833 in Upson County. He was the son listed on 1840 census between age of 5 and 10 years. Listed on the 1845 Poor School Roster in Upson County. Notice that he was listed from the 490th district. There is where George Shattles drew land. Although I did not locate any apprentice records, he was probably apprenticed from the Poor School and taken to Mississippi where he married Elizabeth Palmer on February 1854, Jackson County. They were listed on the 1860 Perry County, Mississippi Census. Elizabeth was 27, born in Mississippi and they had three children (born in Mississipp), Delphey, age 6, George, age 2, John, 6 months old (census was taken September 1860). His service in the 38th Mass Regt, Co. F. is interesting. Unless he was sympathetic with the Northern cause, my guess is that he was captured by the northern army and made to enlist. There was a lot of fighting going on about that time, and this was common in those days.
Comments: I notice that some persons tracing this lineage state that George Shattles was born 1782 in Pennsylvania. (This one had a wife, Barbara also). I could not read his place of birth on the 1850 Monroe County Census. John Shattles is the only person who could be the father of David Shattles. There were no McGraws who had a son in this age range, etc. Since so many of the Shattle children ended up in the Upson Poor House, it is most logical that we find David there in 1845, as his siblings were already married and he was the youngest child. John Shattles must have died about then. I did not find him on census records after 1840. However, please note that a John Shattles and his wife appear on the 1869 Upson County Pauper List. The family in Upson County appears to be quite poor. Were they Irish? No doubt old George Shattles had other children. I only dealt with what I could find in Monroe and Upson Counties.
