Shannon Genealogy
About the year 1820, three brothers, James, Joseph and John left their
native home on the banks of the river Shannon in northern Ireland, to
seek their fortunes in the New World. James Shannon taught school in Liberty County and was afterwards
principal of the Richmond Academy in Augusta. Later, he was
professor of Latin and Greek in the University of Georgia. While
there, he was elected chancellor of the University of Missouri.
Joseph Shannon graduated from the State Medical College in
Augusta, later settling in Mississippi.
Dr. John Shannon, the youngest brother, studied medicine under Dr.
Milton Anthony of Augusta and graduated at South Carolina Medical
College in Charleston, afterwards settling at Cabaniss, Monroe Co.,
Ga. His death was announded in the Atlanta Georgian newspaper
dated 10/18/1907. The LWT of Dr. John Shannon was probated
9/2/1872 Monroe Co., naming wife, Rachel J. And issue. His wife,
Rachel J., made her LWT dated 8/28/1891, probated 11/2/1891
Monroe Co., Ga. Naming husband and issue.
Issue:
- James M. Shannon was b. Cabaniss, Monroe Co. 9/11/1839, d.
10/17/1907. He was sent to the University of Missouri where he was
educated by his uncle, James Shannon, graduating at said university
in July of 1859. He returned home and taught in Jasper Co. 1 1/2 years.
He m. Miss Mary A. Freeman of Jasper Co. 7/1861, going at once to
war, joining Co. C, 14th Ga. Regt., A. P. Hill's Division.
