G. Ignatius Semmes, born 11 November 1758 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, died 6 June 1834 in
Wilkes County, Georgia. He was married (1) on 9 June 1799 in Warren County (License) to Henrietta
Thompson and (2) ca 1810 to Mary Cooksey. Apparently the family were Roman Catholics, belonging to the Church of the Purification of
the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Locust Grove, Georgia. The following LWT of Joseph Thompson was recorded in Wilkes Will Book
A, page 33:
...Should Henry Semmes or any Semmes grandchildren die before 16, property is to be returned
to the estate. To grandson George Hargraves a slave. He left land for a priest's home, according
to the rights of the Roman Catholic Church if established within two years; two acres to be laid off
by my son Henry Bradford Thompson so as to include the burying ground, chapel, and spring, the
northern line to be fixed about five years from Ignatius Semmes grave, gift to the Roman Catholic Church for
a grave yard. A deed of Gift from Ignatius Semmes to his granddauther, Annie and Henrietta Semmes, of slaves. Signed 12/9/1809,
probated 5/7/1810, Wilkes County, Georgia.
