MRS. CATHERINE SCHIKAN
MRS. CATHERINE SCHIKAN was a pioneer resident of
Marthasville in 1840 when Atlanta was nothing but a wilderness of
woods. Mrs. Schikan recalled that there were paths here and there,
leading to almost nowhere. Mrs. Schikan donated land at the corner
of Mitchell and Elliott Streets (several hundred feet), land which she
owned. "She was a woman of great public spirit, and almost up to the
time of her death she was always in good spirits and delighted to
relate the incidents of Atlanta's earliest days and to tell of the
wonderful growth of the once forlorn wilderness of woods." Atlanta
Georgian, 7/16/1907.
She was born February of 1826 in Germany and died at 115 Oglethorpe Avenue, Atlanta, 7/15/1907, buried Oakland Cemetery.
