Ryan of Edgefield County, South Carolina


The following deed in Edgefield County Deed Book 5, pp. 68-81, dated 7/8/1791: John Ryan to Benjamin Ryan, both of Edgefield County, for consideration of 4, 560 acres of land located in Georgia within twenty miles of the Rock Landing on the Oconee River, have sold 4,560 acres, being twelve tracts; one, 100 acres granted on 2/1/1786 to Martha Ryan; two, James arrentine's 150 acres granted 6/23/1774, bounded by Daniel Ellis, James Harris, John Ryan, Moses Kirkland,John White and Harmon Galman at the time of survey. Three, 352 acres, late the property of Moses Kirkland shown in Plat No. 3 bounded North by the lands lately the property of Moses Kirkland, South by Richard Kirkland and West by Rolley Robuck and Joseph and George Miller. Four, 384 acres, late the property of Moses Kirkland known as Plot No. 4 bounded Northeast by John Ryan and John Rutledge, East vacant, South by lands late the property of Moses Kirkland known by Plat No. 4, bounded Northeast byJohn Ryan and John Rutledge, East vacant, South by lands late the property ot Moses Kirkland and West by John Lucas. Five, 100 acres of John Ryan's bounded Southeast and Northeast by John Ryan, Northwest by Willis Odum and Southwest by Edward Rutledge. Six, Isaac Kirkland's 300 acres, being part of 643 acres granted on 5/7/1787 and bounded by John Ryan, Willis Odum, Edward Rutledge, Esq., Francis Sinquefield, William Hargrove and Jacob Fudge at the time of the survey. The above tracts all join each other and are on Chavers and Horns Creek of the Savannah River. Seven, John Harvey's 200 acres granted in 7/1768 and is bounded by Benjamin Ryan and Joseph Walker on Nobles Creek at the time of the survey, but now called Horns Creek. Eight, John Ryan's 84 acres granted 6/5/1786 and bounded by aforesaid lands and Edward Rutledge at the time of survey. Nine, John Ryan's 660 acres granted 10/1/1787 and bounded by Bolen Stark, Reubin, Roberts, Robert Lang, Christian Gomillian,David Burks and William ROtten. Ten, John Ryan's 637 acres granted 3/3/1788 being near the head of Turkey Creek, bounded by the above lands mentioned Christian Gomillian and Reuben Roberts. Eleven, John Ryan's 593 acres granted 5/7/1787, being on Paces branch of Shaws Creek bounded by Thomas Swearenham and Abraham Oden. Twelve, John Ryan's 1000 acres granted 3/3/1788, being on Horns Creek and bounded by Rebecca Stark, Van Swearenham, Benjamin Ryan, Edward Rutledge and Capt. Ryan. Recorded 7/11/1791.

Benjamin Ryan, Sr. died 1813 in Edgefield County, his LWT dated 9/20/1808, probated 11/19/1813, wherein he named his wife, MIlley and his brother, John Ryan. Also his nephew, Benjamin Ryan; niece, Sarah Goldman, and another heir, Mary Elder Moore.

John Ryan died 1837 in Edgefield County, his LWT dated 3/13/1827, probated 10/6/1827 wherein he named his nephew: Benjamin Ryan. Niece: Sally, wife of Benjamin G. Gullman. Grandnephews: John E., Locan, Benjamin J., Pickens and Stanmire Ryan and William G. Gollman. Grandnieces: Peggy G. Smith, Mary Tillman (wife of Benjamin), Elizabeth (wife of M. Moseley), Sarah, Lucretia, Edney F., Rachell, Priscilla and Auvuvia Gollman. Also named was Elizabeth Berrymore, wife of Locan Ryan; John Ryan Read, the son of Dr. R. Read and John S. Geter.
