JOHN RUSSELL
JOHN RUSSELL was b. 1775 near Charleston, S. C., probably the
son of John Russell, Sr. The family were loyalists, involved in
shipping between the Colonies and England. John Russell, .Jr. had a brother, Dr. William Russell, who returned to England. He left the Colonies at the time of much friction between the Colonies and
Britian. It has been proved that John Russell, Jr. was a merchant
seaman and ship builder. A record of John Russell and his wife, Mary
Hogg, is given in the American State Papers, Vol. 4, Public Lands,
1859, Washington, D. C.
During the Revolution, John Russell, a Tory, fled to the Colonies to
avoid persecution. He m. Mary Hogg, dau. of Governor Hogg of N. C.
4/27/1796. Mary was b. 1762 in N. C. The Hoggs were also Tories
who fled to Spanish Florida. John and Mary Russell lived on the
Island of San Salvador where all their children were born. After the
Revolution, about 1821, they left the Bahamas for St. Augustine,
Florida on the scooner "Perseverance" (built by John Russell), later
renamed the "Bararitta" after being traded to the Spanish Governor
for a land grant. Their plantation "Good Retreat" was received by
John Russell for the 53-ton vessel. The plantation, located in
Graham's Swamp, was later sold to Charles W. Bulow in 1821, after
the death of John Russell. It is now called "Bulow Plantation Ruins."
John Russell d, 1815 while visiting the home of his daughter, Eliza,
who had married a Naval Officer, John Philson. He is buried near the
home of his daughter. Tn 1821 the LWT of John Russell was
probated, St, Augustine, Fla. (written in Spanish) and the plantation
sold to Mr. Bulow. After his death, his widow and children left
Spanish Florida and lived for a while in Glynn Co., Ga, His sons,
Richard Henry and Edward William attended the celebrated British
Academy, Rugby, and later the University of Oxford.
Later, Mary Hogg Russell and her children were residents of
Walthourville in Liberty Co., Ga.

- EDWARD WILLIAM RUSSELL b. 4/10/1798 San Salvador m.
Sarah Susanna Way, the dau. of Rev. William and Drusilla Hines
Way 4/24/1824 in Waltbourville, He left the low country and
relocated in Northwestern Georgia. They were residents of Cobb Co., Ga. in the 1840's, on Powder Springs Street across from the entrance
to the National Cemetery (their home still stands). This home is mentioned in his LWT, also his planta tion "Russelldale " in Walker
Co., near Lafayette,Ga. They were members of the old Midway
Presbyterian Church, Midway, Liberty Co., Ga., and later the old
Marietta Presbyterian Church. They removed from Liberty Co.
because of Sarah's health. He d. at his plantation in Walker Co.
4/30/1863, and he and his wife are buried in the old Marietta
Cemetery. Children:
- William John Russell b. 2/8/1825 Liberty Co., Ga. He was
educated in England, and m. 12/29/1859 Rebecca Harriet Brumby in
Marietta, Ga., the dau. of Colonel Richard Trapier and Isabella Mary
Bravard Russell, of Marietta.
- HENRY RICHARD RUSSELL b. 9/30/1801 San Salvador m.
Caroline Hardee, a daughter of John H. Hardee, one of the early
settlers of Liberty Co., Ga., on 1/20/1825 in Walthourville, Ga.
Caroline Hardee was b. Camden Co. 12/12/1808. Henry Richard
Russell d. 5/3/1842, buried in old Hardee Cemetery on the Hardee
Plantation. A daughter, Sarah, is buried beside her father.

3/19/1916 Atlanta, Ga, m. 11/1856 in Atlanta, Ga., Mary Eliza be th
Gordon (1834-1896), dau. of Colonel James Gordon of Dalton, Ga., a
first cousin to General Gordon. Children:
(a) Gordon Russell b. 1857 Huntsville, Ala. where his father
had been involved in Coal Mining. He attended Univ. of Ga., became
a lawyer, practicing in Dalton until 1881, when he removed to Van
Zandt Co., Texas. Congressman Gordon Russell served 12 years in
Congress, resigning to become U. S. District Judge of the Eastern
District of Texas. he married twice and d. at Winnsboro, Texas.

- William Milton Russell b. 1838 Camden Co., Ga. m. Henrietta
Barden (b.1838). He served in Civil War, Co. C, 60 Ga. Regt.
Infantry, lost his right arm while serving; prisoner of War at Ft. Delaware,
released in 1865. 1869-84 he was Judge of the Ordinary
Court, Lafayette, Walker Co., Ga.

1/10/18 23, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Walthour, early settlers
of Liberty Co.
- ELIZA RUSSELL b. San Salvador m. John Philson, Naval
Officer. Eliza and her children died at early ages.
