Reese



Benjamin Reese lived first in that part of Wilkes County which became Warren County. Benjamin Reese owned part of the original 1281 acres confiscated from Sir James Wright, which he purchased. Part of this land may have been in Columbia County, because of the following deeds:

Columbia County Deeds

29 June 1786. John Garrett, Gentleman of Augusta and Catherine, his wife, sold to Benjamin Rees, Esquire, of Wrightsboro Township, for 250 pounds, 1, 285 acres in the township, originally granted to Sir James Wright, seized under the laws of confiscation and banishment, sold by the Commissioners to said Garrett, September 13, last.

31 May 1791. Benjamin Rees sold to William Smith for 50 pounds, Lot No. 67 in the Town of Wrightsboro, originally granted to John Slater, son and heir-in-law to John Slater, Sr., deceased, by deed of conveyance to said Rees dated 19 November 1789.

27 March 1791. Benjamin Reese and wife, Sarah, sold to Abraham Sanders of Wilkes County for 60 pounds, 230 acres on Middle Creek, bounded West by land sold to Hugh Reese.

Another family, which appears to be a relative, was Hugh Reese, Sr., born 20 December 1742 in Virginia, and died 12 December 1825 in Columbia County, Georgia. Some of his children may have been born in South Carolina. The family resided in the Town of Wrightsboro, in Columbia County (now McDuffie County). His LWT was dated 13 November 1823, probated 14 June 1826 in Columbia County, naming wife, Elizabeth Newsome Reese, and his children. He married (1) Mary Jane James, a daughter of Sherwood James, and, (2) Elizabeth Newsom on 20 November 1809 in Warren County. Issue:
