Ramsey of Abbeville, South Carolina and Georgia



Thomas Ramsey Sr. was born in 1750. He came from Pennsylvania to Abbeville, South Carolina when he was fourteen years old and lived in that vicinity for 39 years. He was married to a daughter (probably Margaret) of Mrs. Mary Buchanan who died 1796 in Abbeville and named her grandson, Henry Givens Ramsey in her Last Will and Testament. About 1803 Thomas Ramsey removed his family to Jackson County where he was listed on the 1810 Jackson County Census, then Jasper County and finally Henry County, Georgia where he died in 1832. During the Revolutionary War he enlisted in 1775 near his home in Abbeville, and returned home from the war in 1781 and 1782, having served in the South Carolina Militia under Capt. James McCall, and was under General Greene at the battle of Kettle Creek in Georgia. Issue:

Note: Mrs. Mary Buchanan died 1796 in Abbeville District and named her grandson, Henry Givens Ramsey in her last will and testament as well as daughters, Margaret and Mary. Mary was married to James McMillan. One, Alexander Ramsey, was granted land on 2 Mar 1789 in the Pendleton District, which he and his wife, Mary, deeded on 17 Nov 1794 to William Dickson, being 200 accres northwest of Chaughee Creek of the Tugaloo River, now Washington District, South Carolina.
