Pullen of Virginia, North Carolina; Hancock & Monroe Counties
John Pullen, son of John Pullen, Sr. (born ca 1736, died 1808 in Wake County, North Carolina), of Virginia, probably Petersburg, where his brother, William was born, drew in the 1805 Hancock County, Sa, Land Lottery, along with John Pullen, Jr. Very little is known about him, except that he was listed on the 1813 Tax Digest of Hancock Co., owning land on Dry Creek. In 1820, he drew again in the Land Lottery, land in Monroe County, Georgia. Sarah Pullen, widow, listed on 1820 Hancock Co., Ga. Census, as being over age of 45 years and having children: two sons ages 16 to 26 and daughter to age 10 yrs.
Issue of John Pullen:
- John Pullen, Jr., the last two deeds listed above apparently refer to John, Jr., who was not listed on the 1820 Hancock County Census. He drew in the 1905 Seorgla Land Lottery from Hancock County and has a recorded deed in said county of 1806. This means that he could not have been listed as one of Sarah Pullen's sons aged 16 to 26 on the 1820 Hancock Co., Ga. Census, but is the John Pullen listed on the 1820-30 Wilkes County Census. John, Jr., b. ca 1785, married Polly Murray on 13 June 1813, in Wilkes County From The Wilkes Papers 1773-1833 the 1930 Trustee Poor School Fund of the Dougall Academy, John Adams, teacher, lists John Pullen's children: Elizabeth, age 11 (born 1819) and Thomas, age 9 (born 1821) (Thomas Y. Pullen, born 1821, listed 1850 Wilkes County Census, wife, Mary M., born 1818, and daughter, Susan A. born 1848).
- Samuel H. Pullen, born 1794/1804. I think he is one of the male children, age 16 to 26, listed on 1820 Hancock County Census under Sarah Pullen.
"Samuel H. Pullen, cashier of the Edenton Branch of State Bank, suicide, leaving two helpless children." [1]
The orphans of Samuel Pullen drew in the 1827 Hancock County Lottery, which lottery was for orphans and soldiers.
- Sally Pullen, married 1813 in Hancock County, John Hagin.
- male b. 1794/1804.
- Daughter, born 1810/1820 in Hancock County.
