Pope of Isle of Wight County, Virginia and Halifax County, North Carolina

William Pope (1634-1700) was married ca 1660 to Marie and two years later received a land patent in Richmond County, Virginia. William was a Quaker. On 8 Oct 1656 William Pope received a land grant of 196 acres in Nansemond County, Virginia, adjoining Capt. Thos. Godwin's land, due to said Pope for transporting four persons; later granted 200 acres. On 25 Jul 1665 he was granted 950 acres in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The births of his children were listed in the Southern History Assn. Publications:
”William Pope son of the aforesaid William and Marie was born the 15th of the 8th month 1662; Henry 30 Nov 1663; Alse was born 8th month 1667; John Aug 6th 1670.” Issue as follows:

• William Pope, born 15 Aug 1662 in Nansemond County, Virginia.
• Henry Pope, born 30 Nov 1663 in Nansemond County, Virginia, died 1729 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and named his children in his last will and testament, viz:

  1. William Pope.
  2. Henry Pope.
  3. John Pope married Sarah Watts, daughter of John Watts and wife, Alice (English) Pope (who died 1678). John Pope settled 1720 in Caledonia, North Carolina, then a part of Chowan, later Bertie, Edgecombe, then Halifax County. John Pope was justice of the peace for that precinct in 1732. He was a member of the General Assembly from Edgecombe in 1742 and 1745 when it was reported to the assembly that he had died. Issue:

     1. Henry Pope.
     2. John Pope resided in Halifax County, North Carolina, his will datted 2 Jan 1764. Wife, Tabitha. Issue:

        1. Burwell Pope.
        2. Willis Pope.
        3. John Pope, born ca 1755 in Halifax county, North Carolina, Revolutionary War Soldier, married Elizabeth ca 1791 in Wilkes County, Georgia. Received four land grants in Georgia, and died 15 Nov 1795 in Wilkes County.
        4. Henry Augustin Pope.
        5. Wiley Pope.
