Ponder of Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia



Daniel Ponder was born ca 1730 in Buffalo Gap, Augusta County, Virginia, died in Elbert County, Georgia. He married Jemima Bennett, born 1730/1740 Cedar Creek Delaware, died ca 1784, the daughter of Stephen Bennett and his wife, Margaret. Issue:

  1. Mary Ponder, born York County, South Carolina, died 1810/20 York County, South Carolina.

  2. Daniel Ponder, born before 1755 in Buncombe County, North Carolina, died 1815/1817 in Monroe County, Georgia.

  3. James Ponder, died ca 1826 Greenville District, South Carolina.

  4. Abner J. Ponder, born 1755, died Dec 1832 in Bon Aqua Springs, Hick County, Tennessee, buried Ponder-Perkins Cemetery. He married Jane Knox on 23 October 1802, Oglethorpe County.

  5. John Ponder born 1757/1758 Buffalo Gap, Augusta County, Virginia, died 25 October 1804 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He married Margaret Cummings (born 1759, died 22 May 1842 in Monroe County, Georgia). The LWT of Margaret Ponder in Monroe County, Georgia, dated 13 December 1836, probated 7 July 1842, names children...James, Amos, John Lewis, Daniel, Silas, Malinda Gilleland and Jemima D. Mitchell. Issue:

A. Melinda Ponder married Mr. Gilleland.

B. Jemima B. Ponder married Mr. Mitchell.

C. Mary Anne Ponder, died 4 April 1864 Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

D. James Ponder. Listed on 1830 Monroe County Census.

E. Silas Ponder, his LWT dated 26 October 1836, probated 10 November 1836, Monroe County, names wife, Lucille (sp?), and children. Listed 1830 Monroe County Census. He married Leadda Dardin on 31 May 1827 in Monroe County. Issue:
1. Laurancy E. Ponder.
2. Peggy Ann E. Ponder.
3. William A. Ponder.
4. Martha Ponder.
F. Amos Ponder born 6 December 1785 Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died 6 February 1851 Monroe County, buried Ponder Cemetery, Monroe County. Listed 1830 Monroe County Census. He married Nancy Milligan (born 17 October 1800, died 5 June 1853). They are buried on the old Ponder homeplace, in the Ponder Cemetery.

Issue:

1. Oliver W. P. Ponder born 1822 in Monroe County, died May 1864 Monroe Co. He married Nancy Ann Amanda Rogers (born 1826) in Monroe County on 25 January 1844. Issue: Mary E. Ponder, born ca 1846, and Amos J. Ponder, born 1847.

2. James Washington Head Ponder born 3 May 1825 Monroe County, died 26 Jan 1890 Monroe County, married Emily Angeline Chambliss, daughter of John M. Chambliss and his wife, Elizabeth Jordan . Issue:

a. Henry Oliver Ponder born 10 November 1863 Monroe County, died 18 September 1926 Glenmora, Rapdes Parish, Louisiana, buried Forest Hill Cemetery, married Annie Lorena Peninger (27 November 1879 Sugartown, Louisiana-11 March 1964 Lake Charles, Louisiana, buried Glenmora, Rapides Parish. Issue: Lydia Emily Ponder, born 25 August 1906 Forest Hill, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, died 10 May 1908, Glenmora, Rapides Parish, Louisiana; and Annie Louise Ponder, born 27 November 1913 Forest Hill, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, married 19 December 1935 Alfred Valerie Thomson.

b. Lulie Milledge Ponder born 28 September 1876 Monroe County, died 22 July 1966 Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina, buried Forsyth, Monroe County, Georgia, married John Gordon Smith on 7 Nov 1894.

G. John Lewis Ponder born 13 February 1788 Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died 29 April 1865 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He was listed on the 1830 Monroe County Census.
H. Daniel Ponder, born 31 October 1794 Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died 6 November 1867 in Monroe County, Georgia, buried Ponder Cemetery, Monroe County, which was the old Ponder homestead. (On the Silas Thomas place) He married (1) on 29 October 1823 in Monroe County, Jane E. Lewis (11/7/1809-5/6/1837). He married (2) on 2 July 1838, Elizabeth McMickle (1 April 1811-1 Jan 1880). LWT of Daniel Ponder dated 14 November 1866, probated 6 January 1868, Monroe County, Georgia, names wife, Elizabeth.
