Penn of Caroline County
William Penn was born 10 Mar 1785 in Caroline County, Virginia, one of the eight children of Philip and Martha Haliday Penn. His brothers and sisters were Kitty, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Lucy, Joseph and John Penn. Another John Penn, this one a cousin of William Penn of Caroline County, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Philip Penn served the Colonial Army during the American Revolution; allowed draws in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery; awarded land in Elbert County and removed his family there. William Penn was married to Abigail Wilson, born 1 June 1791, died 23 Mar 1868 and by her had six children, viz: Jane, Elizabeth, Harriett, Mary, William, John and James. Two of the sons, James and John, were married to sisters, Jane and Lucy Ham.
William Penn built a large two-story house about one mile northeast of Trion, Georgia. He died in Chattooga County, Georgia on 14 September 1870.
William Ham Penn, born 10 Nov 1839, died 5 Sept 1920, was the eldest son of James and Jane Ham Penn. His only brother, John Wilson Penn, was killed at Missionary Ridge in 1864 during the War Between the States. William Ham Penn was married on 29 Dec 1875 to Martha Ann Hill, a daughter of Middleton and Sarah Hinton Hill.
