Means of Morgan and Walton Counties


WILLIAM MEANS was b. 1732 Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey, a son of William Means and his wife, Martha Paine. Issue: James Means, William Means, b. 1758, d. 1819 Elbert Co., Georgia; Samuel Means b. 1756, d. ca 1831 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia; Robert Means b. 1760, d. 1829 Greene Co., Illinois, and Hugh Means.

HUGH MEANS, son of William Means, was b. 1773, d. 17 Jan 1837 Walton Co., Georgia, and m. Winifred. He was listed on 1830 Morgan Co., Ga. Census, removed to Walton Co., Ga., his LWT filed Bk 1834-1839. Hugh Means was J. P. Morgan Co. 1813-1817. He was residen~ of Elbert Co., Ga. when he drew in 1805 Land Lottery from that county, and in 1807 he drew Lot 145, 16th district, Baldwin Co., Ga. Walton Co. WB D, P. 361, distribution of est. of Hugh Means' estate was made to heirs: Mrs. Winifred Means; John W. C. Campbell; Joseph Boren; John S. Means; and J. R. Browning, dtd 1/12/1838. The w. of Hugh Means was Winifred, listed 1840-50 Walton Co. Census, whose LWT recorded Bk L, P. 274-6, Walton Co. Wills dtd 5/29/1854, naming following heirs: Margaret Browning, dau.; John S. Means, son; Louisa King, dau.; Harriett A. Boren, dau.; Joseph Boren of Walton Co., son-in-law. Grandchildren: Sarah Isabella Boren; John Alfred Boren; Joseph Boren; Mary Boren; Margaret Louise Boren; Allen Blanton King; Hugh Means; and Louisa Hammond Means. The Southern Recorder dated 10/5/1837: "Hugh Means, aged 64, died at his home in Walton County 17 January 1837." Issue: WILLIAM MEANS, son of William Means, was b. 1758, Lt. Elbert Co., Ga. 1791, Ga. Militia, had deed transactions In Elbert Co. 1794, 1797, 1807. Franklin Co. Deed Book LLL, P. 175, 3/28/1799, "John Fergus of Franklin County to William Means of South Carolina,..conveys 200 acres Franklin County, on waters of Groves River" His LWT dtd 1819 Elbert Co., Ga., names wife, Elizabeth, the dau. of Jacob Prewitt, and children. Elizabeth was listed 1830 Elbert Census. Issue: JOHN MEANS, b. 1770/1790 is probably a brother to Hugh and William, however,no proof exists for such a fact. He resided in the same area that they did, however, left before 1820 to move west. John Means was a Pvt. in 29th Regt., Morgan Co., Ga. in 1814, and gone from Ga. in 1820. This is probably the father of Hugh and William Means who are found on the 1840 Sabine Co., Tx. Census, and William listed on the 1850 Dewitt Co., Tx., Census, b. 1810 Ga., farmer, wife, Frances, b. 1811 Mississippi and issue: Ferdinand B., b. 1831 La.; Margaret L., b. 1833 Tx; Sarah F., b. 1837 Tx.; Napoleon F., b. 1839 Tx.; William B., b. 1841 Tx., with Frances Blackburn, b. S. C. b. 1768. The widow of Hugh Means, Patsy, found 1850 Dewitt Co., Tx., Census, b. 1800, son, John, b. 1830, Alabama William Marshall Means, above, b. 12/14/1809 Ga., d. 1/31/1876 Meansville, Tx. m. Frances Amelia Blackburn, b. 5/1812 Miss, d. i 7/14/1875 Meansville, Tx. and had: John Helm Means, b. 9/3/1853 Tx, d. 2/9/1929 Gillett, Wyo., m. 1/29/1873 Stacey Malinda Gallahan and had : Callie Amelia Means, b. 12/31/1873 San Patricio, Tx., d. 11/29/1963, Medina, Tx., m. Hugh Logan Carpenter.
